Sustainability "A Waste of Time" Trip

Rosa Davies —

In early March this year the Sustainability Council went on the educational “A Waste of Time” trip to the recycling facility in Christchurch.

This proved very effective as being at the facility was both memorable and confronting, giving perspective to the issues and common misconceptions of recycling. From this trip we reflected on the fact that education around this needs to happen at a younger age and to more people. This is why on the 23 to 25 November, we have organised the whole of Year 9 to experience this.

We believe taking the whole year group to the facility is the best way to educate our students in order to meet our sustainability goals, while also learning about how our waste is recycled and reused in Christchurch. The workshop ensures students are informed and able to separate waste accurately, both at home and school. Content includes the “dos and don’ts” around the yellow bin, as well as shedding light to the huge local and global benefits of doing it correctly. This trip enables the girls to mentor and share this learning within our wider community and gain understanding as to why waste reduction is crucial for the health of the planet. “Global good, Local love”.
