Careers Update

Krissi Schumacher —

Updates on Experience & Open Days Cancelled

Featuring Updates from Ara, University of Canterbury, University of Auckland and AUT

As universities and polytechs seek to protect the safety of students and staff as New Zealand remains in Levels 3 and 4, it’s no surprise that many events have been cancelled that would have given many students the opportunity to explore the campuses they hope to call home in the coming years. While large gatherings are no longer an option, in many cases these tertiary education institutions have done a remarkable job of making online opportunities available whenever possible. Below are updates and links to those online opportunities whenever available.

Ara Institute of Canterbury

Ara has made the call to cancel all Experience Day sessions up until 10 September. The remaining September session options can be seen here: https://hail.to/ara/publication/187IVyz/article/48ZQLDe

Ara has also extended the closing dates for applications for a number of programmes, including Performing Arts (NASDA), Midwifery and Medical Imaging programmes, all of which now close 15 September; closing dates for Nursing & Broadcasting are still set for 30 September. You can apply for these programmes and learn more here: https://hail.to/ara/publication/187IVyz/article/VeMZHa0

While I’ve highlighted the items particularly of note to our students, you can see the full Ara newsletter here: https://hail.to/ara/publication/187IVyz

University of Canterbury

As Aotearoa New Zealand remains in Alert Levels 3 or 4, the health and safety of our students, staff and visitors remains our top priority. Under Alert Levels 3 and 2, we are unable to show people around campus as restrictions on gatherings remain in place. We are also unable to run Halls of Residence tours until we are in Alert Level 1.

For these reasons, University of Canterbury’s on-campus Rā Tōmene | Open Day planned for 9 September is unable to take place.

We know students will be keen to continue making important decisions about their future, and we still want to show them what UC has to offer. That’s why we’re holding Mini Online Open Day on Thursday 9 September for all our prospective students, parents, and whānau.

This is a chance to explore UC from the comfort of their home. They will be able to:

  • Join course info sessions
  • Chat live with UC staff to find out everything they need to know for their first year
  • Pop along to the virtual Info Hub to learn more about UC

They can also virtually explore campus and our Halls of Residence on a 360-degree tour at any time.

Students who had registered to attend Rā Tōmene | Open Day will automatically be registered to attend our Mini Online Open Day.

University of Auckland

As Auckland remains in Alert Level 4, the University of Auckland cancelled their in-person open day scheduled for this past weekend, 28 August. There are a large number of webinars available for viewing in UofA’s Open Day Hub, which can be accessed through this link. You can also tailor an online exploration experience for yourself by responding to a handful of questions through this link: https://yourworld.auckland.ac.nz/

AUT

Due to the ongoing uncertainty around COVID-19 alert levels and to prioritise everyone's safety, we have made the decision to cancel Home @ AUT LIVE on Friday 24 September.

We understand these are uncertain times and the university prides itself on ensuring you have all the information you need to make an informed decision on your accommodation plans for 2022. Please keep an eye out for further opportunities later in the year.

Next Steps with Scholarships

Though school leaver scholarships have closed, many opportunities for scholarships are still available.

Over the past month, many of our Year 13 students and I have been very busy working through school leaver scholarship applications at universities across New Zealand. While all school leavers scholarship applications are now closed, there are still a lot of opportunities for students to seek out scholarship opportunities through universities and private funding. The easiest way for students to search for these scholarship opportunities is through each university’s scholarship database, and I’m also very happy to assist any students who are having trouble finding scholarships that they may be eligible for—just send me a message via email (k.schumacher@rangiruru.school.nz) or through Teams and we can set up some time to search together. Links to each scholarship database can be found in the table below:
