Last week was the culmination of summer sport with the annual Years 9-13 summer tournament week. This was the first time in three years we have had a full roster of sports involved in tournament week and what an outstanding week for sport at Rangi Ruru. Below is a summary of results from the week that was!

Huge mihi to our Dragon Boating Squad who competed at the SISS Championships, taking out 1st place in 20s, 200m and 500m races and placing 2nd place in 20s and 1km. The team also brought home the trophy for the Top Performing School in the 500m race, and the trophy for the Overall South Island Champion School.

The squad have put in enormous mahi to achieve their goals - it is no easy feat to have 20 paddlers working in unison to propel a dragon boat through the water!

Equestrian
Sadly the polo tournament was cancelled last week due to weather, however three of our riders Tabitha White, Honor Forbes and Gretal Meares took part in a SUPA polo training day. Sixteen riders competed in the Canterbury SS Dressage on Wednesday this week. Sixteen riders competed in the Canterbury Secondary schools dressage competition on Wednesday with some great results:

  • Rangi Ruru Navy 3rd
  • Rangi Ruru Gold 4yh
  • Mikey Wildermoth - Top Rider Overall

A full list of results will be published at a later date.

Two of our golfers had a great day at the Canterbury Secondary Schools Champs. Eva Yin and Vanessa Lim (both Year 9) competed in 18 hole rounds at the Templeton Golf course with Eva placing 3rd in Gross, shooting 81 (+8) and Vanessa placing 4th in Gross, shooting 84. Outstanding mahi from our young golfers.

Mountain Biking
The Rangi Ruru mountain bike team of Ruby Hewitt, Vesper Woodfield and Juliet Freeman had a fantastic week of racing at the South Island Secondary Schools Champs in Queenstown. The weather did everything it could to try scuttle the organisers plans, causing lots of last-minute changes to event timing for the Cross Country, Downhill and Enduro events at Coronet Peak in Queenstown.

Across the three disciplines the racing was fast and exciting with some incredible skills on display. The Rangi Ruru team did themselves proud with some amazing results:

  • Cross Country: Vesper Woodfield U15 – 1st; Juliet Freeman U17 – 1st

The NZSS Triathlon Championships were held in Wanaka late last week.

Charlotte Chiles won the NZ U16 individual title, winning by a 1 minute margin over the next competitor; and then won gold in the U16 Aquathon the next day. An outstanding achievement!

Charlotte then joined with Finella Guttman to earn silver in the NZSS Sprint Senior Team Relay. In the U14 Individual Triathlon category, Kate Sharpe finished 3rd.

Rowing
Outstanding achievements by the whole squad at the NZSS Regatta over the past week culminated in Rangi Ruru earning the trophy for the top school and top sweep school in NZ for the third year in a row.

The team also made history achieving 1st and 2nd place in the U18 8+ - something that has never been done before. And they did it in style – both crews smashing the event record.

A big term of volleyball ended with the SI Satellite tournament for our A team, where they had some challenging games but finished with a high and a win over Rolleston College to place 11th.

This will see all students get involved in a weekly interschool competition in either hockey, netball, badminton or football (which starts in Week 4 of term 2).

In week 3 we will run training/trials in preparation for first day of competition on Tuesday, May 23.

We have coaches confirmed for netball, football, basketball, water polo and hockey and with a possible option for badminton. It is likely that trainings will be before or after school and more information will be sent out once teams are named.

Voice of the Rangatahi Survey – School Sport NZ

School Sport remains as important today as it has in the past. It provides tens of thousands of students each year with the opportunity to strive for their goals, create new and lasting friendships, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

However, there are challenges to keep our young people, our rangatahi, engaged in sport and we must listen and take action if we are to ensure that the next generation has access to these same benefits and opportunities that sport can bring.

Encourage your daughter to tell School Sport NZ about their school sport experience and go into win a $50 prezzy card. Closes April 11, 2023. Click here.
