Sports Awards
On the last Sunday in October, we celebrated an amazing year of school sport with our Sports Awards.
The talent, potential and achievements in our community are outstanding and this was an opportunity to recognise not only achievements, but also contribution and service to sport. A reflection of the calibre of our students; the finalists in the Senior Sportsperson of the Year category had ALL represented New Zealand at a world championship event this year – stunning!
A highlight was the 80 Year 13 students who were recognised for their contribution to sport, representing Rangi Ruru at a South Island or national tournament during their time at school.
Our major award winners were:
Ngā mihi to everyone who was recognised and celebrated at this event. Remember how insanely, wildly capable you are and keep on being your best!
Quiz Fundraiser Success
And the final tally is in! Our inaugural Quiz Night fundraiser was a great success with over $9000 raised to support travelling sports teams. Nearly $5000 went to teams who donated silent auction items or contributed to raffles, with the remaining funds split across sporting codes.
Thank you again to the wonderful whānau subcommittee for their behind-the-scenes support and a huge thanks to everyone who helped support the event – whether by attending or by donating something to be raffled or auctioned. Every little bit helped!
This is set to become an annual event on the sport calendar with a date for 2024 to be confirmed soon.
Canterbury Secondary School Condor 7s Tournament
Rugby 7s is a growing sport at Rangi Ruru and this year we are fielding two teams across two tournaments - the Condor 7's Qualifying Tournament held at the end of October, and the upcoming junior tournament for Year 9s during Junior Tournament Week at the end of November.
The Condor 7's was attended by our Senior A team. A huge learning experience for many of our players, but with lots of grit and perseverance the team finished the day with a win against St Margaret’s College.
The Year 9/10 team will compete later in the month in a Christchurch based tournament.
Canterbury Secondary School Junior Volleyball Championships
Shout out to our Junior A volleyball team who last weekend competed in the Canterbury Secondary School Junior Volleyball Championships at Pioneer Stadium. After day one the team had done enough to make top 8, winning two of the three games; and on Saturday faced tougher competition, winning one of three games, pushing top teams to some tight sets. Sunday games were for final placings with the team securing 6th position - the highest place a Rangi Ruru junior team have finished in over 5 years. Good luck to the team as they head to Dunedin later in the month to contest the Junior SISS tournament.
Year 7/8 Sport Update
This year has certainly gone fast. Next Tuesday, 14 November is the last of the CAIMS weekly. Students have had a great time developing their skills on the field, pitch and courts, playing against other intermediate school teams across Christchurch.
On Tuesday, 21 November students will be put into teams and will participate in a fun inhouse tournament, playing codes they have participated in throughout the year.
Up and coming:
** Rangi Ruru is the host school for CAIMS Athletics this year. We are seeking volunteers to help for the day. If you are available, please contact Mrs Nicole Sinclair.

Head of Year 7/8 Sport
Lucy Peoples (Year 7) recently raced in the Mt Somers mission 5km race. It was Lucy’s first 5km race and it included a 2km uphill section which was very challenging. Completing the race in 27 minutes and 30 seconds Lucy won the Female 11-17 Years Old category and was the 3rd fastest female overall. Awesome mahi Lucy!
Lulu Pringle (Year 7) was selected as the non-travelling reserve for the South Island U15 Cricket Squad, which will travel to Dubai early next year. Congrats Lulu!
Juliet Freeman (Year 11) competed in the National Orienteering Champs, hosted by Hawkes Bay Orienteering Club over Labour Weekend. Held over four days of great competition, the event consisted of a sprint on the very tight and technical Splash Planet amusement park map, a middle distance on the tricky Mangarata mountain bike park map, near Waipukaurau and long course and relay championships on the open farmland map at Tuna Nui, Sherenden. Running in the W16 Grade, Juliet had a fantastic weekend with 5th place in the sprint, and three 1st places in the middle distance, long distance and the relay.
Emily Burt (Year 8) – Emily has ended a fantastic year of Fencing taking the U13 title at the Mid-South Fencing Championships last weekend, and captaining her team to gold. With this being the last event of the year, Emily is the mid-south female Epee champion for U13, U15 and U17 as well as mid-south secondary schools champion. Congrats Emily!
