Relay for Life

Lucy Miller —

On Saturday 1 April a group of 27 Rangiora High School students spent their day down at Dudley Park participating in Relay for Life. Relay for Life is a 12 hour event made to fundraise for the Cancer Society. It’s a day for everyone to come together to celebrate our survivors, remember those we’ve lost and fight back for those battling cancer. The day is filled with activities such as zumba, yoga, and tai chi as well as some fantastic singers. The majority of the day is spent walking laps around the track to symbolise that cancer doesn’t stop, and so neither do we. After a moving opening ceremony, we began our walking for the day until the sun began setting. We then came together to remember those who have passed from cancer, and laid down candle bags around the track to celebrate their lives.

The students involved put up a great effort in fundraising by doing things such as a school sausage sizzle, and coming up with great ideas such as guess the jellybeans, and a chocolate wheel. With the help of family and friends we’ve managed to raise just under $3500 as a school for this year's relay with Sophie Barwick, Caro Czechowski, and Aliannah Thompson being our top fundraisers. Two remarkable Year 13 students, Izzy Kerr and Hayden Wafer, have spent the past few months on the committee organising the entire event. Well done for all your efforts.

Thank you to all of the amazing students that dedicated their time to relay for life this year, we especially loved the dedication to your costumes! A big thank you also to Mrs Badenhorst who helped plan and organise our school’s involvement this year!
