Hillary House News

Term 3 has been mixed for Hillary House, with the highs of achieving a well run and very successful fundraiser, to a frustrating Senior Winterfest, interrupted by weather and fire alarms.

The “Save it or Shave it”, fundraiser made a fabulous $830 for the Himalayan Trust.

Students could vote on which willing volunteers would keep their much loved mullets or sacrifice them for a good cause. We had six amazing young men step forward and the ultimate sacrifice was made by all but one. The Himalayan Trust was incredibly thankful for the large donation, made at a time when, world wide, many countries are struggling.

A huge shout out to the wonderful student executive that made this event happen and showed a great deal of maturity and organisational skills in running this event.

House Choir on the 14th of August is always a highlight of the house events. This year, Hillary was determined to take out the event and with the theme of Power Ballads we thought we had it well in the bag. Singing the classic, 'Nothing Gonna Stop us Now', by Starship and 'E Minaka Ana', Hillary delivered a polished and tuneful performance. Unfortunately it was only enough to gain us fifth place. A massive thanks to Eva Kim who organised and ran the choir, showing a huge amount of passion and dedication and an ability to step out of her comfort zone to tackle new challenges.

A long, drawn out, and often interrupted Senior Winterfest has seen some excellent netball skills over the lunch breaks. We have seen everything, including fire alarms, interrupt our sport. Hillary ended in fourth position, which means we are still in fourth on the leaderboard. Only six points separate us and Ngata.

Senior Public speaking approaches fast and Hillary is traditionally very strong in this area, so we are focused on that for the rest of the term and we are currently selecting a Junior Executive team to help run the House for Term 4.

It has been great to see so many Hillary students getting back into sport after all the Covid interruptions and life beginning to take on some semblance of normality again. With Seniors heading into the all important fourth term and external exams looming, I would encourage the emphasis on a balanced timetable of school work, physical activity and social time. Looking after our wellbeing is the first and most important thing we can do.

Keep up the hard work everyone - we are looking forward to seeing what else our students can accomplish before the end of the year.
