Student leadership camp

Julia Malcolm —

This year's camp was a bit different, but equally fun and engaging for our 48 student leaders.

It seemed very early in the year to be heading off on camp on January 24, but 48 students and six staff did exactly that this week.

Monday saw the group at school learning about leadership style and skills and then putting these to work in a series of group challenges that exercised their problem solving skills.

On Tuesday we headed up to the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre where five instructors led activities that had students climbing up trees, going on a rescue mission, river crossing, and a competitive team challenge where they had to work together.

On Wednesday the group headed to Waikuku Beach for an epic inter-house Sand Sculpture competition which was won by both the Sheppard House and the Mansfield House. This was followed by the 'Mediocre Race' which turned out to be amazing. Following clues, with a teacher driver who was not allowed to speak, the groups had barriers/roadblocks  where they had to perform some sort of challenge, or solve a puzzle to get the next clue. It was a close finish!

We ended the day with the Camp Concert and again the house groups put their energy and creative skills together to produce a skit that had some reference to their house motto. This was won by both Lydiard House and Mansfield House. The staff item was not scored, but definitely set the bar high!

Thanks to the staff and students for committing to these three days. We are set for a good year. Thanks also to Mrs McLean who organised the three days and was a great example of how to 'pivot' when red lights present themselves!
