Adventure Racing

The newly formed RHS Adventure Racing team had an awesome first outing on Wednesday 9th September, competing in the annual Get2Go Challenge at The Groynes.

Get2Go consisted of three 80min disciplines starting with mountain biking, then a Rogaine and finally canoeing / stand-up-paddle boarding.

The mixed team had prepared well by practising all of the same disciplines locally in advance, so nothing was too surprising or difficult.

Competition from the other 20 Canterbury-wide schools was tough and RHS pushed each other hard in the true spirit of teamwork.

Finishing middle of the field was a very credible result for a first attempt, and the team now looks forward to building into other events to come.

More members are always welcome to join by hooking into the ‘RHS Adventure Racing’ facebook page or signing up at the Sports' Office.

Basketball

We had 14 teams entered in the School Sport Canterbury competition this season, three in the CBA competition and two in the CBA Thompson and Whelan competition. We had some great results with the following teams gaining top three placings.

Boys:

Senior Gold – 1st

Intermediate A – 2nd

Intermediate Social Blue – 2nd

9A – 1st

9B  – 1st

9 Gold – 1st

Girls:

Senior B – 3rd

Senior Social Purple – 2nd

Junior A – 3rd

Senior A Boys had a strong finish to their Thompson Trophy Division 1 competition and look forward to being strong contenders for next year. The boys are competing in a College Invitational tournament in Christchurch in the school holidays with teams from throughout the South Island after their Winter Tournament was cancelled.

Senior A Girls had a super season, making the Semi-finals in the Whelan Trophy Division 1 competition. The girls qualified earlier in the season for the NZ Secondary Schools' Nationals, however this National Tournament was also cancelled. The young and talented team look to be at the top of their game next year only losing one player from Year 13 this year.

Thank you to all our coaches, managers, drivers, parent supporters and the players for a great season, albeit a different one.

Cheerleading

A first for Rangiora High School, the cheerleading team of 19 students have been attending lunch time training during Term 3 and are starting to look very sharp.

Quade had a fast transition and led out in the final run and Ethan was 5th out of transition. Quade was challenged for first with a sprint finish but held off and won by 1 second. Quade finished first overall and first in under 16 boys age group. Ethan finished 5th overall and 2nd in under 18 boys age group.

This was a farewell event for three of our Year 13 riders, Sophie Stephens, Brooke Adams and Ruby Kerr. Thank you for your contribution to Equestrian at Rangiora High School over the years.

Football

Football Junior Boys

The Junior Boys Football team were a wonderful group of young men and a lot of fun to work with. They gelled quickly as a team and put together some outstanding performances, finishing in 3rd place in the Division 1 section. The performances bode well for a strong junior team again in 2021, as well as some great talent heading into the senior teams. Many thanks to the parents who supported, and to Mr Berg and Mr Wright for the coaching and organisation.

Premier Girls

The 2020 season was all about rebuilding for the girls, having said goodbye to many stalwarts at the end of last year. Despite this season's ups and downs, the girls went out there each Wednesday and represented RHS with pride and positivity. We will miss our Year 13's who leave us this year - Abigail de Visser, Abbey Neilson, and Emma Udy, and wish them all the best. There is a great stream of talent following in their wake and we look forward to 2021.

Boys 2nd XI

After a long drawn out season the Football Boys 2nd XI finished off with a couple of difficult games against Cashmere 2nd XI and Rolleston College to finish 4th overall in the Senior Div 1 competition. A big thank you to all the regulars who were able to play each week as we had to play most games with only 11 players. With a young team this year, we look forward to having a strong more experienced team next year.

Football Boys First XI

The 2020 edition of the Rangiora High School Football First XI can be proud of the contribution they have made. The team involves footballers from across the senior school and has been captained by Regan Connor and Jack Sail. Under the expert guidance of Jason Fahey the boys have made clear progress not only in their skill level but in their deeper understanding of the game.

Once again Rangiora High School competed In the Connetics Christchurch Schools' Premier League. A competition which involves Canterbury’s best youth footballers and unsurprisingly, every game involves well-coached, physically strong sides who play at high speed. After some heavy defeats in recent years, we were under no illusion about what we would encounter in 2020. On balance we had a better season this year taking two wins from our pool matches. This meant we finished 5th in our pool of seven teams and made it into the playoff section of the league.

The team made their way to Timaru on August 30 to take part in the Timaru Football Experience. This event was offered as an alternative to regular tournament fixtures, cancelled due to COVID 19 restrictions. Featuring eleven teams from across Canterbury, the event was played in excellent spirit and featured some attractive football. Our boys competed well despite encountering some very strong teams and took encouragement from some close losses and a good win against Timaru BHS. The goal of any tournament is to accept an opportunity to test your skills against strong opposition and practise personal values in a range of challenges. In this regard, the team was highly successful and the boys proved to be excellent representatives of our kura.

Each member of the squad can be proud of the way they have played the game and the manner in which they have conducted themselves off the pitch. In all of our dealings with opposition players, coaches, match officials and members of the public, the boys have maintained the highest levels of respect and integrity. In the words of Mr Jason Fahey:

“We are about creating great young men, not just good footballers.”

If this is how we define success, then we have achieved our goal.

Hockey

The girls' and boys' hockey teams have completed an excellent season.

The boys' team finished on a high, winning their hard fought final against Papanui High School 2-0. They scored two outstanding goals to secure the top spot. They have trained hard all season and can be proud of their efforts. Special thanks to Guy Strawbridge for coaching the team.

The girls also had a good season beating Riccarton High School in their play off for third place. Special thanks to Holly Warming Smith, Year 13, for her commitment to the team over the five years and to Janelle McKellow for coaching the girls' team.

The teams would also like to thank Simon Green and Hayley McKellow for umpiring most weeks.

Both teams did Rangiora High School proud, playing with great commitment and sportsmanship.

Indoor Climbing

The indoor climbing teams had a fantastic two days participating in the South Island Indoor Climbing Competition. Due to level 2 restrictions there was a limit on the number of teams that could enter, however out of 22 teams the boys' team of James Parker, James Paterson, Benjamin Patchett and Michael Planner finished up 2nd in the boys' category and 3rd overall. The mixed team of Alice Reid, Lauren Trolove, Aimee Planner and Jamie Prickett finished 9th out of 11 teams. Both teams climbed beside each other the entire tournament with each climber completing a minimum of 22 climbs each day but some would have completed 40 or more climbs each day. It was great to see and hear the encouragement and support the teams offered each other as they challenged themselves physically and mentally. Both teams well and truly modelled our school values in the way they took part in this competition. Congratulations to them all.

Netball

Congratulations to our future netball talent, the Year 9A Netball team who won the final of their grade at Canterbury School Sport Wednesday sport, beating Marian College to win 20-13. The girls were ready for the challenge right from the get go, grabbing an early lead in the first quarter and carrying the intensity throughout the game to win 20-13. Well done girls and thanks to the coaches, past students, Kiarna Sorensen, Will Kirk and Tom Webb.

Our Senior A team competed in the Senior Regional Tournament where they beat Craighead 31-18 to take a very respectable 5th place. Our 10A & 9A attended the Canterbury Regional Junior Tournament. The 10A’s had a great week finishing off in 7th place with the 9A’s finishing in 4th. Saturday netball is nearing the end, adn we are proud of the way all our teams have embraced this challenging season and continued to enjoy their netball.

Orienteering Canterbury Championship

It was a freezing cold start to the two day Orienteering Canterbury Champs held at Hagley and Halswell in mid-September. We had a small group, a couple of novices - but all made it home! Both McLachlan boys were 2nd in their sprints on Saturday. Holly Prickett was 3rd in long. Well done everyone.

Secondary School Ski & Snowboard Championships

On August 13th,  our school ski team attended the Canterbury Ski & Snowboard Champs at Mount Hutt Ski Field. It was a day filled with stiff competition, covid restrictions and turbulent weather. Our team all participated with full heart and energy and represented our school with great pride. Both our skiers and snowboarders all demonstrated their dynamic skills on the slalom and enjoyed the remainder of their time on the slopes. Overall it was a great day out and we can look forward to how the team develops over the next year in preparation for next year’s competition.

We have had many events cancelled and seasons cut short due to Covid-19. We were very pleased to be able to bring some events and tournaments to many students and would like to thank all the teachers, staff, outside coaches and managers, parent drivers and supporters who have helped make this happen in the current situation.
