Cyclocross

On 11 August the Southern Cross Cyclocross club held the NZ National Cyclocross Champs at Steam Scene in Christchurch. The weather wasn't fantastic but this is what made it perfect for the many keen cyclocross riders. The more mud the better!
Jacob Turner decided to trade his MTB for the Cyclocross bike for some fun in the off season and Jacob picked up his first UCI National Jersey winning his first event as an under 19 ride

Equestrian Secondary Schools' One Day Event

Rangiora High School One day eventing team took out the Canterbury Secondary Schools' ODE championships at McLean’s Island. Sitting 7th after dressage, the team had to endure tough conditions going into the show jumping ring after a substantial amount of rain. The cross country was more technical than other years and had some tricky combinations to challenge all of the riders.
Our team of Kate Mahan, Brooke Adams, Toby Orr and Hannah Udy put in a solid effort, all going clear in SJ and 3 clear rounds in XC to see us leap frog many of the favoured teams to take out the championship against 25 other teams. The RHS green team of Sophie Stephens, Georgia Williams, Ruby Kerr and Jordan Dunlop were 11th and our third team of Annabelle Boon, Sophie Rosanowski, Yasmine Regos and Grace Leen had a number of excellent SJ and XC rounds between them.

It is great to see Rangiora High School's name on this magnificent cup for the seventh time in the cup's 34 year history.

Football NZ News

We are so proud of you and the team.  An outstanding result!

The Boys' Football team played in the Linwood Cup Tournament in Otepoti (Dunedin). In our pool play we won 1 game, drew 2 and lost 1 which meant we finished 3rd in our group just missing out on a semi final spot. We then played off for 9th-12th and unfortunately lost both these games which meant we finished 12th out of 20 teams. The boys conducted themselves extremely well throughout the week and were a pleasure to take away.

Gymnastics

Congratulations to Alyshia Kemper who has qualified for the 2019 New Zealand National Gymnastics Competition to be held in the first week of October. Alyshia will be travelling to Auckland as part of the Canterbury Rhythmic Gymnastics Team.

Indoor Climbing - SISS

On 5th and 6th September seven Rangiora High School students took part in the South Island Secondary School Indoor Climbing Competition held at the YMCA climbing wall in Christchurch.

The competition was attended by 14 other schools from mainly the Canterbury area but also from Otago. There were 24 teams across three categories, mixed, boys and girls.

On day one the mixed team completed 24 climbs EACH while the boys team who had a late withdrawal of a team member and were left with only three in their team, had to complete 32 climbs EACH on day one. Day two was a slightly different format so each climber completed either 12 or 18 climbs. The difficulty in the climbs ranged from Grade 14 to 24. There was a mixture of ropes, ladders, slab, chimney, overhangs, long and short climbs.

Both teams performed outstandingly. The mixed team finished 6th in their section and the boys' team finished 3rd in the boys' section. The effort the boys' team put in as a team of three was acknowledged when they were awarded a prize for the most individual vertical metres climbed over the competition.

Every climber in the team finished the competition sore and exhausted but exhilarated from having pushed themselves physically and mentally over the two days. The bonus of new friends made, friendships strengthened and spot prizes won, made it all the more enjoyable.

The mixed team members were: Alice Reid, Faith Schad, Michael Planner and Benjamin Patchett.

The boys' team members were: Lachlan Rosewarne, James Parker and James Paterson.

Our thanks also goes to the wonderful parents who provided transport to and from the tournament each day and who also stayed and supported. Thank you also to the parents of the students, without your support and encouragement the students never would have had such a fantastic and rewarding opportunity.

Korfball -SISS

We had a team of ten girls attend the SI Secondary School Korfball tournament in September. The girls had not played together before so started off with a few hard games but came back with some great wins on the final day coming 8th overall in the B grade.

Netball

The Senior A Netball team travelled to Nelson to competes at the SISS Netball tournament. They won the first three games of their pool which placed them in the top 16. In the next pool play they lost one game by 1 and another by 2 which would have had them make top 8.

Two of the Senior A Netball team were named in the Talented ID Players for SISS Netball 2019.

The team travelled back last Friday from competing at the SISS Netball tournament having played 8 games in Nelson to play in the North Canterbury Premier Grade final on Saturday beating Kaiapoi 40-38. It was a great game. These two teams met in 2018 with RHS winning so this is a back to back victory for RHS.

Looking at the trophy RHS last won the trophy in 1978, then back to back 2018 and 2019.

Rugby u15

The U15 tournament draw was a great challenge for the team, playing 3 out of the 4 semi-finalists, and both the finalists. The team learnt a lot and developed as young men and players.

RHS 10 v Rolleston 47

The first half was our slow start problem, with the score 42- 0 at half time. After some strong words at half time the team started tackling and playing rugby to finish off the 2nd half 10-5. The men were disappointed with their start and really wanted to make amends in the afternoon.

RHS 26 v STAC 32

A very much improved effort in the afternoon, with great line speed, and real intensity at the break down saw the game come down to the wire. One lapse of concentration at an attacking scrum saw STAC's no 8 get a runaway try to seal the win.

RHS 5 v Gore 12

A colder wet start saw a very tight game against Gore, where RHS could not get their game going well enough to get around the big Gore pack. The men needed to adjust to the ref's break down interpretations quicker, but the defensive effort was massive.

Rangiora 5 v Dunstan 21

Eventual finalists Dunstan was a game between two similar styles, with both backlines canceling each other out, with plenty of line speed from Dunstan making it hard for RHS to get to the edge. Dunstan's scores were from kick and chases in the end, with the ball bouncing the right way.

Final day two quick half games against

RHS 12 v Roncalli 5

RHS 12 v Ashburton 17

We came away 10th overall.

Ski & Snowboard Secondary Schools' Canterbury & South Island Champs

Mt Hutt produced a perfect day for our 16 students attending the Canterbury Champs in August. Four students went on to compete in the South Island Champs at Cardrona during September with Tegen Bishop taking home a Silver Medal.

Softball

A big congratulations to Hunter Simpson who recently competed in Australia in the Friendship Series tournament for the NZ Developing Sox Softball Team which the team won beating the Queensland U18 team in the final.
Hunter was also awarded the top pitcher medal for the tournament.

This event was held at Waterworld in Hamilton this year, from the 11th to the 15th of September. This is one of the biggest meets on the swimming calendar with over a thousand swimmers and more than 160 schools taking part. Several national titles were broken and lots of exciting racing and competition was had.

Four swimmers -Aria Marsh, Mason Jenkins, Cassie Taylor and Lilli Cheeseman qualified to take part in this competition for Rangiora High. All swimmers represented the school well and upheld the school values of Respect, Contribute and Aspire. Many personal bests were swum by several of the swimmers.

Congratulations to Lilli and Cassie for the following top ten finishes.

Lilli, 10th in 100m Backstroke.

Cassie; 9th 100m Breaststroke, 6th 200m Breaststroke, 9th 200m Im, 8th 50m Breaststroke, 10th 100m Fly, 7th 50m Fly.
