NZ Youth Archery Selection

Congratulations to Meg Elvin and Annie Leen who were awarded 2 of the 3 available positions to represent New Zealand at the 2020 Oceania Youth Archery Champs (in the Under 17 Women’s Recurve division) in Suva, Fiji from 5-9 April. Unfortunately this event has now been postponed. We wish them good luck for the future.

Dragon Boating

There was some outstanding paddling and a fantastic team spirit at the Canterbury Dragon Boating Champs. Rangiora High School had 34 students competing in 3 teams and came up against 13 other Canterbury schools to take out the girls' division.

Rangiora High School gold team placed 1st in the 250m sprints winning the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Girls' Sprint Cup, and 1st in the 500m turns winning the Canterbury Secondary Schools' Turns Race Cup.

Our other teams also competed well with wins in their C and D finals.

This was a great effort, team!

NZ Secondary Schools Triathlon

On 16 February the New Zealand Secondary Schools' Triathlon was held in Wanaka.

We had several students competing and we are very proud of their achievements.

Quade McLaughlin took out the title of NZ Secondary Schools Triathlon Under 16 male champion and Ethan Mclachlan who competed in the under 19 triathlon and finished 25th. Well done

SISS Rowing Regatta – Twizel 13-16 March

Our rowing team of 12 competed in the South Island Secondary Schools' Champs and had some good results. We competed in five A finals and one B final.

Our senior boys Will Rattray and John-Luke Fenn were placed 8th in the A final for the U18 Double skulls and 5th in A Final for U18 Pair. Will also came 6th in the Single skulls. It was a pleasing regatta for them.

Our novice girls Ashlyn Rean and Holly Prickett did very well placing 7th in the U18 novice double skulls, and look to be promising for the future.

Neve Sinclair and Ashlyn did very well to place 6th in the A final for the U15 double skulls.

The team enjoyed the experience of competing against all the other South Island schools and represented our school well.

Equestrian

The three show jumping teams had an awesome day at the annual interschools showjumping competition at the National Equestrian Centre at Mcleans Island. Teams RHS Gold, RHS Green and RHS Black had a great time and there were many clear rounds and placings throughout. RHS Gold competed amazingly against the tough Christchurch schools, and placed 1st out of the whole competition of 30 riders! This is an awesome achievement for team members Brooke Adams, Julia Percy, Harriet Jolly and Grace Gormack. It was great to have so many riders representing Rangiora High School and they should all be so proud of themselves.

Polo Term 1

The polo team had another successful term with five students attending regular training sessions at Waireka Polo Farm, including one student who played for the first time. All the students have made huge improvements in their polo riding, game tactics and stick skills, which has been great.

Four of our students competed in the South Island SUPA inter-schools' tournament on Sunday 1 March. The Rangiora team of Jayden White, Toby Orr, Rebecca Barnett, joined by a student from St. Margaret’s, competed in the C grade and did fantastically, winning all of their games, including some hard-fought battles, and coming out as overall winners. Jayden was awarded Most Valuable Player for the grade, and all three of the students really improved during the tournament.

Ben McDrury competed in the B grade as part of a combined Canterbury Schools' team, who also won all of their games and their grade, so it was a great day all round for our Rangiora High players!

It was a shame to see the second tournament cancelled as the students were looking forward to defending their title with an all-RHS team, but they are looking forward to competing again in Term 4, as well as welcoming some new members to the team.

Cricket

Junior Gold and Green - It was great to have 2 junior teams competing in the CCCA (Canterbury Country Cricket Association) youth grade, some good strong young players coming through. Unfortunately, our 2nd XI folded this term due to players moving on. Many thanks to Shaun Clarke for coaching. 1st XI had a tough competition with 2-day games for the beginning of the year. There was lots to learn from. We won the CCCA Gillette cup round after defeating Lincoln, Darfield, Ellesmere, and Buller High School. For the next round, we played Cashmere High. It was a great game and we were narrowly beaten in a great experience for a great bunch of lads. Our last game was cancelled due to COVID-19. Many thanks to coaches Ben Prain, Steve Lewis, Darryn Ward for giving up their time and expertise to the Club.

Rugby

Everything was on-track for the 2020 season, pre-season games and tours booked, gear ordered, and coaches rearing to go. Now we wait patiently for the next step in what rugby will look like for the season. Many thanks to Craig Mullan and Rebecca McLean for their encouragement via Facebook to keep fit in preparation for the start. Something exciting to look forward to, we are planning a tour to Rarotonga in 2021 for our senior boys.

Rifle Shooting

Rifle Shooting started off with a bang this year! With 12 juniors showing immense improvements in the short time they had on the range. The senior group of 13 students had been making steady progress towards getting competition ready with many putting on personal bests well into the high 90's.

Tennis

  • In Term One we had four teams entered in the Christchurch Schools' competition. These matches were usually played at Wilding Park and the students enjoyed having the opportunity to play at the Christchurch Tennis centre. The van trips to and from Christchurch were always enjoyable and helped with team bonding. These were the placings after five games.
  • Boys B Grade - 3rd
  • Junior Boys - 3rd
  • Girls B grade - 1st equal
  • Junior Girls - 6th

Volleyball

The School Sport Canterbury competition was still in play and the teams missed their last games unfortunately due to COVID-19. The Senior A girls were going to play off for 3/4th, Senior B for 3/4th, Senior C for 6/7th and the 10A for 1st/2nd. The Senior A and Senior Girls' teams managed to compete in the Mainland Champs played on 6-8 March and both teams had some great full set games which did not reflect their results in the competition. The Senior A Girls came 5th in Division 2 and the Senior B Girls came 16th in Division 3. This tournament had the most teams entered to date. Unfortunately the girls could not attend the other two tournaments so hopefully we will be back on court for Term 4.

Futsal

The futsal girls' season saw more girls than ever keen to play so we were able to enter two teams in the Regional Competition which was great. The Gold team made it to the semi-finals, but unfortunately were knocked out in a penalty shoot out. The Green team improved each game they played with many new to the sport, and they developed as a team across the tournament. From these two teams we selected a team to attend the National Tournament, which we are defending champions, however this had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. Pam Fraser is keen to be back next season and hopes more girls will join and we also want to start a boys' programme.
