125th Women's Suffrage Event

Bridgitt Robinson —

Year 13 student Miriam Stirling was on stage to take part in the question and answer session with the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spoke to a sold out crowd in Christchurch at the Isaac Theatre Royal on September 13th to mark the 125th anniversary of women's suffrage in New Zealand. Schools were invited to bring 20 students to the event, along with one student who would be on stage with representatives from the 19 schools attending. Miriam Stirling, Sheppard house exec member, was chosen for this role.

The 20 girls from RHS Year 11 and 12 were selected after responding to three questions:

Why would you like to attend?

What question would you ask the Prime Minister?

How do you think you can impact young women in our school community?

The answers from the 42 students who applied, were quite amazing and showed how well informed and enthusiastic many of your young women are about politics, democracy and the history of women's suffrage. It was exciting to be in a packed theatre to mark the start of the celebrations. Miriam and the girls on stage each had to pose a question which the Prime Minister answered, giving the audience an 'up close and personal' view of her thoughts and opinions.

As we waited for Miriam to come out after the media session, the girls enjoyed a stroll down New Regent Street and a rollicking good ice cream to top off the day.
