Mental Health in Sport

We had the Voices of Hope organisation come in and present to over 200 of our sporting students. Israel Dagg was the main voice in this and spoke of his stories surrounding his struggles. The students were very engaged in this, and it will be something we look to continue to provide moving forward.

Athletics

13 students enjoyed a fantastic day of competition at the Canterbury Secondary School prelims earlier in March with 4 students qualifying through to finals.

Harry Witt - 3rd place 3000m, Olivia Hurley - 6th place Shot put, Brook Fortune - 4th place 800m (qualified, but not attending), Jess Hendren - 1st place High Jump (qualified, but not attending as overseas competing)

Three students will go on to compete at the South Island Secondary School Championships in Invercargill over the weekend 31 March - 2 April.

Basketball

Trials have been held for all year levels and 176 students have been placed into 19 teams. Basketball inter school competition gets underway in Term 2.

This year is the first time we have sent a team to the 3x3 Secondary School Nationals in Auckland. Our Senior Boys' team - Korben Murray, Kobe Murdoch, Harvey Knaggs and Jonty Daniels with Brock Harlum as referee and coached by Mike Barrett. During Pool play the team won against Avondale College, Elim College, Kelston High,Trident High and lost to Fraser High, Pukekohe and Saint Kentigen College This puts the boys 4th in Pool A and finishing in the top 16. During the 9-16th place playoffs they lost to St Andrews and Palmerston North but won against Fraser HIgh to finish the tournament in 15th place, out of 31 teams

Canoe Polo

Our dedicated team of 9 students have participated in Canoe Polo at Lake Roto Kohatu (Sawyers Arms Road) each Wednesday this term with very pleasing results for a new team. Two senior students (Adam Wake, Isaac Wilkinson) have made a huge impression by taking on a leadership role with managing the team and coaching the players which is fantastic to see. Well done Adam and Isaac.

Cricket

Girls' Cricket:

Our Girls' cricket team has had some good opportunities to continue to learn and grow their skills in cricket. We entered the Yeah! Girls Smash program which is a soft-ball social cricket opportunity for entry level cricketers. The format is an action packed 8-aside pairs cricket, so everyone gets an equal chance to bat and bowl. We played a combined team from Marion College and Rangi Ruru and our girls won.

Unfortunately, we had a couple of days cancelled due to the rain. We also entered the Gillette Venus competition. This competition is a T20 comp which determines the qualifier going on to represent Canterbury at Nationals. Again, unfortunately, the weather did not play its part and this tournament has been postponed until term 4.

Due to the tournament being postponed, we organised a game with St Hilda's 2nd XI and we played them in a T20 game at Hagley Park Polo grounds. We scored 107/5 with our top scorer being Lucy Miller who scored 54. St Hildas managed to get the runs in the 17th over 3 wickets down. Ruby Darragh took 1 wicket for 5 runs and Amber Patterson took 1 wicket for 15 runs. Charlotte Middleton took this amazing diving catch! The best of the day.

These cricket girls are an amazing bunch who represent our school so well. One proud coach right here!

Boys' Cricket

The first half of the cricket season has come and gone. We have had 55 players involved in cricket this year with a Year 9, Year 10, 2nd XI, 1st XI and girls team. All of our boys teams have been playing in the Christchurch Metro Competition for this season which has been a welcome change and a good challenge.

Our 1st XI had a very different look to it this season. They are a young team with a lot of talent and great attitudes.Unfortunately, our results have not been what we would have hoped for. The effort certainly could not be faulted. We would like to thank Mainpower Oval who have allowed us to train on the outdoor nets. This has been great.

Our Year 9 team has had a great season with many consistent performances. This is a talented young group who have stepped up each week and represented our school well. We can certainly see that some of these lads will be pushing for higher honours soon. A massive thank you to all of the parents in this team for their support and for the scoring they have been doing each week. We are very grateful.

The Year 10 team has also had some great performances and again have displayed some good fighting spirit. Towards the end of the season numbers have hampered their progress but they have kept at it. As with the Year 9 team, there are some talented cricketers in this group who will be pushing hard for higher honours. A massive thank
you to ALL the coaches and parent help that have supported our cricket teams this term.

Finally we would like to extend a huge thank you to those companies who have come on board to sponsor the cricket
club. To:
Shore Dellow Accountants
R&D Heat Pumps and Ventilation
ARL Solutions Ltd
Ground INvestigation Ltd
Generation Homes
North Canterbury Books
The Good Home Pegasus

Thank you for your support. It is certainly appreciated.

Dragon Boating

The Dragon Boat team (consisting of 18 female students) had an amazing day's racing at Lake Ruger (South Eyre Road) on Sunday 26 March with a surprise win in the 1000m race (against Rangi Ruru, Oxford, Darfield, & Cashmere) and placing 3rd in the 200m race at the Aoraki Dragons South Island Dragon Boat Invitational Championships. We are so proud of these girls and their fierce competitiveness shown on the day. Well done!

A big thanks to Bridgitt Robinson who coordinated our trials. Also a huge thanks to our junior and senior selectors. No teams would have been formed without the volunteer help of these great people.

Competitions start officially on Saturday 29 April at Mainpower Stadium, but there have been some pre-season tournaments going on.

On Thursday 30 March our Senior A team played to secure a spot in the Premier Grade for North Canterbury. We are very proud to announce that they played amazingly well and have been named in the Premier Grade. Well done girls and Coach Karen Humm and Manager Genna McLaughlin. We wish you a great season.

Saturday 1 April was a Pre-Season Tournament. This was played at Dudley Courts in Rangiora. Senior A and B, as well as 9A and 10A took part. After a rainy start, the day came out fine and there was some great netball played. All girls played with passion and dedication. A selection for comments from their coaches:

Great team vibe for Senior B, lovely bunch of girls who showed some nice combinations for the tournament. 3 wins and 1 close loss 13 -14. Happy with the result.

Stand outs - consistency and strong play whatever position they were in: Anahera Jones and Phoebe Keating.

Our girls won their section… whoop! whoop!

Was a great day. Senior A had three wins and a loss (though the loss was only by 2 points and we had everyone playing out of position so would have won if we played in our normal positions. What we did have was a great team day with some great team spirit and a chance to build combos.

I believe the girls had a great day at the tournament. 2 wins and 2 losses with lots of learnings from all 4 games. The team just grew through each game and finished the day with their best game.

Proud of them all really. Just the start to what will be an awesome season from these girls.

A HUGE thank you to the coaches and managers and parents of these teams that gave up their Saturday to coach and support our teams.

All our teams have coaches and managers. This is a huge commitment, we can not offer Netball at Rangiora High without these people. Thank you!

Also special thanks to Marie Childs, Chanel Kent and Kirsty Pritchard who answered all my crazy questions over the past term.

Rugby

Rugby — Image by: Bridgitt Robinson

Rugby season is about to kick off and we are excited for our five boys' teams and one girls' team to get on the field. Preseason games have started with our 1st and 2nd XV boys travelling to Oamaru at Easter weekend for a tournament and our U15 tournament team playing at the Matches Festival in April. We have a new gear sponsor, L & A  Apparel, and together with our main sponsors for our 1st XV teams (Harcourts, Brand Logging, Mike Greer Homes, Straight-n-paint and Heartland Bank) as well as our back of jersey sponsors, our players will do our school proud in their green and gold uniforms. All our rugby players will this year receive brand new training tees, thanks to Signature Plumbing, Erect Scaffolding and James Roofing. Our volunteer coaching and management teams are falling into place too. We just need those icy cold mornings, our gumboots and umbrellas and rugby season will be in full swing.
