Kapa Haka

RHS —

Our schoolwide kapa haka consists of approximately 40 keen and eager students who range from Year 9 to Year 13. We were invited to perform at the recent Colour Festival held at Victoria Park where we got our first opportunity to sing and haka before a live audience. Since then we have also stood on stage at the Level 1 Academic Awards evening and more recently at Waimakariri District Council. It was here that we met the Mayor and helped celebrate the Race Unity Poster Ceremony. Many of our kapa are new but they really stepped up in confidence on the day. We have had three Japanese students who have represented our kura and fully embraced our Māori culture in te reo and kapa haka. Unfortunately they have returned home but hopefully others will feel comfortable enough to join.

Our performance schedule is a busy one with our main focus being the Waitaha Secondary School Regionals in Term 3. Before that we will stand at Manu Kōrero and Te Matakura o Ruataniwha. All in all kapa haka is strong and growing here at Rangiora High. Kia mau!
