Year 13 BCT36

Michael Jervis —

Amberley Primary School project

After commencing the project in February this year, the students worked mainly on the design aspects, planning the project and organising the resources, (materials, sizes, amounts, costs etc).

Lockdown meant that the project incurred a 6 week delay and the first task for the students on returning was to revise the programme to see if we could complete the project in the remaining senior academic year.

The Year 13 BCT36 cohort have all been involved in all aspects of the work since returning to school, this involved costing, ordering and machining the timber, constructing 8 main frames, 6 posts and 2 special splayed posts. The standard of finish was very important and the students took turns in the quality control and approval of the work as it was completed.

The frames have been assembled at the school to allow the floor structure to be cut and fitted, this will all be numbered and taken down for transport to the school when everything is completed. The students are currently working on the last main component which is the staircase, the timber has been machined and it will be constructed using traditional methods. Every student has taken responsibility every week to email the client (Mrs Juliet van den Heuvel) with a progress report and photos. The Amberley new entrant students are also excited about the project and this week all sent special letters to our students with comments about the project.

The value of this project is that the BCT36 cohort can all gain the required evidence for the curriculum requirements, along with gaining invaluable 'real-life' project experience and essential skills. We hope to complete in the time available, however there is no room for error or delay.
