Creative Arts News

RHS —

Students and staff have been participating in numerous creative arts activities throughout Term 2 and into the holidays. Below is a short report of what events have recently taken place and what we have coming up early in Term 3.

Showquest 2023

We had around 85+ students perform at the Christchurch Town Hall on Tuesday 16 May. We placed second in the open schools category and won the following awards: The best use of props and highly commended in choreography. We also won the School Spirit qward which is a pretty special accolade - decided by the Showquest crew who observe the students over the whole day. They look at the schools’ behaviour, respect, culture and the way in which they represent their school. Thank you to all of the staff and student leaders who assisted in bringing our 2023 performance to life! We will look to perform in Showquest once more in 2025.

Rockquest 2023

We had a band compete/play at the Canterbury Regionals for Rockquest 2023. They qualified for the regional finals on 10 June at the Aurora Centre at Burnside High School. The students involved are: Jamie Shepherd, Thomas Reid, Mitchell Gray. The band missed out on a spot in the final but performed very well. Congratulations to all of these students.

Looking ahead to the holidays and Term 3 - we have the following events to our students are participating in:

Kaiapoi Art Expo

The annual Corcoran French Kaiapoi Art Expo is Waimakariri District’s largest visual art show and attracts large crowds every year. Some of our art students, along with Georgia Glass (Visual Arts teacher) will be exhibiting their work at this annual event. The expo takes place over the weekend of 8-9 July, open from 10am to 5pm at the Kaiapoi Club, Raven Quay, Kaiapoi. Entry is via gold coin.

Showcase

Our Showcase Event will take place on Thursday 27 July in the school hall. It will showcase all aspects of creative arts including a visual arts display in Te Tauraka. Little Llama Cafe will be open offering hot drinks and refreshments.

We have students who will MC the event and we have a number of items from dance, drama, kapa haka, musicians and the lighthouse students will also perform. The show will be free to attend but ticketed, we will ask the audience to make a koha following the performance should they choose to. Tickets can be collected from the student office.

Theatrefest

A group of Year 9,10 and 11 students are currently rehearsing for Theatrefest on 29 July. The group is being directed by Matilda Fauth of Year 11.

Kapa Haka Haerenga

Our across school kapa haka will be visiting and performing at a number of our contributing primary schools on Friday 28 July. This will allow our students to workshop and connect with the students in these primary schools and get a chance to perform in preparation for the Waitaha Kapa Haka festival that takes place later in Term 3.
