Year 13 Graduation

Julia Malcolm —

Graduation at the James Hay Theatre finally went ahead - albeit with restrictions.

On Friday night, December 3 we were able to go ahead with graduation and see off our Year 13s to the next chapter in their lives. The restrictions of the orange traffic light system were in place but having the student sin their parents in this beautiful theatre was very uplifting after the cancellations and postponements that have affected so many events this year.

We were treated to a a beautiful valedictory speech from Head Girl, Ella Spark followed by guest speaker Lizzie Mullan who reflected on her 6 years since leaving school.

Freya Kersey and James Constable gave two beautiful performances, 'll Be There' by the Beatles and the other,  an original composition by James entitled 'With Both Hands'. It was wonderful to hear their voices and guitar in a theatre with such great acoustics and no doubt a thrill for them to perform on this stage.

Among the students being acknowledged were the 23 students who have been awarded 27 scholarships by universities, and tertiary institutes. Our students are footing it with the best.

The amazing haka from the Year 13s to the five students winning the school's top academic awards, is something I will never forget. All in all, it was a magical evening.

Congratulations to all the students for their achievements this year, and especially to the following:

Heyley Currie - Prime Minister's Award for Excellence in Vocational Studies

Brooklyn Beach - Rangiora High School Scholarship for the Top Māori student

Ruby Gill-Clifford - Lamb and Hayward Prize for  endeavour in academic, sporting/cultural activities, leadership and service

Ruby Gill-Clifford and Freya Kersey - Macintosh Cup and prize for Runner Up to Dux

Jordan Doran - Dux of the School
