Cricket
Our 1st XI cricket side have had a mixture of results to finish the year, currently sitting in 4th place with one match remaining. The team is made up of a number of young promising athletes who have shown real potential to compete at the top level. This was illustrated by a top performance from Archie Prain, who scored 197 runs against St Bedes 3rd XI this season.
Girls' Cricket has begun! We have had some very keen senior students who have rallied a group of girls to start a girls' cricket team. Ms Tiffen has been training the girls every Wednesday after school and the girls are learning al great deal and most importantly showing great improvement. Six girls are also playing in the Colts teams which play on a Saturday and the girls are really enjoying themselves.
On Wednesday 23 November, we played a friendly Twenty20 game against Kaiapoi High School. The game was played in great spirits with the winner of the game being Rangiora High. For some of our girls it was their very first game of cricket so they did extremely well. The New Zealand Cricket President, Lesley Murdoch, was in attendance and watched the entire game. Lesley took charge of the scoreboard and loved being involved and supporting girls' cricket starting up in both schools. Lesley spoke to the players from both teams and was incredibly impressed with the way the girls represented their schools. In 2023, we are hoping to take the RHS Girls' Cricket team to Timaru for some friendly games.
Our Year 9 XI competed in the Canterbury Country round of the Junior NZ cricket tournament. The team had a tough match first up struggling to compete against a strong Lincoln High School side. The second match of the round saw a much more competitive performance from the team narrowly losing to Rolleston College by five wickets.
Volleyball
Junior Volleyball Canterbury Champs.
Junior A boys' team fought every game against some tough competition. Their great teamwork and never give up attitude saw them win their last game by a big margin, they placed 11th.
Junior A girls' team came 2nd in division 2. Only losing 3 games over the weekend (they had to default their 1st game due to being caught up in the traffic jam). They worked hard and gave each game 100%
SISS Junior Volleyball Tournament in Nelson
Junior A Girls' team won 4 out of 7 games and finishing 6th out of 20 teams in division 2
The future of Volleyball at Rangiora High is looking very promising!!!
Touch
Our mixed touch team has been working hard in training as they prepare for nationals in Rotorua at the beginning of December. The team comes together with a mixture of youth and experience and are building well toward their tournament.
Special Olympics
Congratulations, Samantha Shepherd
Samantha has been selected into the New Zealand Special Olympics Team for Dressage and will compete at the summer games in Berlin in June 2023.
What a fantastic achievement Samantha, well done!
Senior A Girls Basketball Nationals
Our Senior A Girls' Basketball Team were able to finally compete in the BBNZ Secondary School Nationals in October, after qualifying for the last 3 years, but unable to attend due to Covid. This was an incredible experience for the team, who represented Rangiora with pride. The team unfortunately got placed into a difficult pool, and missed out on their top 8 goal, losing 2 games by single digits including to reigning champions St Peter's, and this year's runner up St Andrews. The team managed to successfully win 4 of their last 5 games to finish in 11th place. The experience for our girls was extremely valuable, and with a very strong cohort returning in 2023, they will look to use that experience to go even further next year.
Sport & Cultural Prizegiving
In late October we hosted our annual colours awards evening, which recognises our top achieving students across sporting and cultural activity within the school. It was the first time since Covid hit that we were able to hold this celebration with family and friends of those who received awards, which was an exciting occasion. There were a large number of colour awards, oak awards, and special awards presented, as well as our two major trophies. This year's recipient of the McCord Cup, given to the student who achieves the best overall sporting success, was Paris Karaka for her efforts in Touch, Volleyball and Netball.
The winner of the Hays Cup, given to the student with the most outstanding individual achievement, was presented to Jess Hendren, for winning the Oceania Championship for high jump. Congratulations to all of our 2022 award winners (see list below).
A Service to Sport award was presented to Mr Keith Anderson & a special tribute was made to Jill Searle for her service to sport during her 38 years at RHS. Jill is retiring at the end of this term.

Takahe to Akaroa road relay
The event was cancelled & replaced with Bottled Lake (8 km loops).
The relay team had trained for several months & were never going to let a change of venue put them off their stride.
The girls all did exceptionally well, running faster than their predicted times. Whilst they were mainly competing against the other 2 high schools, they were entered in the B grade women's division. Not only did they beat both Cashmere and CGHS, but the girls were the overall winners of the B grade competition.
They received a trophy and medals up on the podium, a real highlight for everyone!
We had Becky in 36.40, Brooke in 39.33, Amelie in 37.10 and Olivia in 36.02 (we also had ex student Ashleigh Woolett as a late fill in at 42.51). The team was made up of 2 students from new life school and 1 homeschooled girl.
A fantastic effort, well done girls and thank you so much Jo Ramsay for your dedication, motivation and coaching.
