North Canterbury Kapa Haka festival

RHS —

This week, schools from all over North Canterbury are taking part in a two day, and two night Kapa Haka festival at Ohoka School Hall

This is always a fantastic event, hosted by Tuahiwi School, where children from 5 to 18 years old come together to perform. Our group has been rehearsing in their timetabled Kapa Haka class time and also in the evenings and weekends to perfect their set which comprises waiata, moteatea and haka.  At the same time there has been plenty of’ backroom work’ going on to get costumes ready. Our thanks to whānau, friends and staff for all their awhi and assistance.

The group’s performance was beautifully choreographed by Whaea Mel Houpapa and showed  power and pride. Congratulations to the group - for the performance itself and the huge effort that went in to getting on stage. The performance is a large part of the final assessment for students who take Kapa Haka as a subject, where they stand to gain Level 1 or 2 Performing Arts NCEA credits.
