Paul Donnelly —

Dear Parents/Caregivers and students

Tēnā koutou katoa

Term 3 has come to an end, and students and teachers can take some time to relax and recharge their batteries.

The winter sports codes had a rather strange season this year due to the movements to different levels because of COVID. It was good to see students still able to participate in sports and other activities outside the classroom. A sincere thank you to all parents, who provided transport, coached, managed or supported your daughters and sons on the side of courts or fields. Without members of the community, supportive parents/caregivers, sports or any other events would not happen.

Rangiora High School is a busy place and full of life, even in this new norm your students had numerous events to participate in. By bringing together any large group of young people, one is exposed to the vibrancy and energy of young people.  As teachers we have to capture and channel that energy.

Our PB4L (Positive Behaviour 4 Learning) ethos is instilled throughout the whole school. In essence, if students are motivated, listened to and we work together, both student and teacher potentialities are seen and developed.

To our Year 13 students, this is your last term three holidays. This may seem a frightening thought. 2021 is not too far away and yes, there is some water to flow under the bridge before 2021 descends on us. But spend some time this break preparing for next year, whether it is preparing a CV, making sure you have referees to recommend you and your documents all in one place for when you need them in the future. The payback will come later.

To Year 12 and 11 students, there is always some school work to be done, take time to review your progress, acknowledge where you are doing well and not so well. Enjoy the break, take some time to be with family and friends. Year 12’s enjoy the semi formal and look after each other. Applications for next year leadership roles will be called for, so if you have something to offer our school then apply, leadership opportunities abound everywhere, you just have to decide lead.

To Year 9 and 10, you have no pressure of external exams or NCEA assessments, so with time on your hands, help around the house. Surprise mum and dad or your caregivers and do some extra chores. Be good and think of others before you act. Go outside and smell the fresh air and do not spend too much time looking at a screen.

To everyone, if you are on the road travelling near or far, please take care, especially our young drivers. Better to be late, than sorry. If you have passengers with you look after them in your travels.

Yours sincerely
