Sheppard House

RHS —

Kaua e mate wheke, mate ururoa…

… and welcome to Sheppard House for 2019. Thus far the year has brought a mix of success and challenges for the students and staff of Ngati Mako. We have been ably led by our Executive team who have distinguished themselves by introducing some exciting new initiatives designed to make the school experience more meaningful for everyone.

Here’s what the Executive team have to say about the year so far:

Maggie Gaughan: Being an executive member of Sheppard House has been a wonderful experience that has pushed me out of my comfort zone, furthered my leadership and social skills and given me the tools of public speaking and organisation.

Jemma Johnson: Being one of Sheppard’s house captains for 2019 has definitely been worth it so far. I have been faced with new challenges and stepped out of my comfort zone which has helped to build my confidence. It’s rewarding seeing the house strive and all the Sheppard students getting stuck in. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us throughout this year. Bring it on!

Berend Oldenburger: Being an Exec member has been amazing for me. From learning great skills to organising events it’s been a great experience and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store. I thank the fact that I put my name down for the role of exec member because it was so worth it!

Blake Benny: Being on the Sheppard Executive has been a blast so far. I’m really enjoying the opportunity to give back to my house and be part of so many different events. I’m excited to see our plans come to fruition.

Shannon Smart: Being a part of Sheppard Exec 2019 has been a very challenging but very rewarding experience. I have learned so many skills that will stick with me for ever. I am so glad that I stepped out of my comfort zone and applied for this role. It is something I will never regret!

Josh Lees: Exec has been a wonderful experience. I get to work with an amazing team and I look forward to the fantastic ideas we come up with this year.

Our Year Nine students recently had the privilege of spending three glorious days at the Boyle River Outdoor Education Centre high in the Lewis Pass. We were very lucky to strike perfect conditions for the entire time we were there. The students distinguished themselves by taking on all of the challenges they were presented with and I am sure they have taken away some valuable learning and lifelong memories. Highlights of the 2019 Camp include:

· A new and improved Mud Run

· Professional catering

· Raging torrents on the Boyle River

· The loudest night line on record

· Three hours sleep

· Professional Catering (worth another mention)

The annual Senior Summerfest Competition wound up in Week Nine and proved to be a great opportunity for our seniors to show house spirit and demonstrate their sporting prowess. This year saw the introduction of a new game in the form of Benchball. A hybrid of Netball, Gaelic Football and Bullrush, the game was a real favourite with participants and spectators alike. While the Sheppard team lacked height in defence, we made up for it with speed and precision. Over the five games we were well represented in terms of numbers. While all players made a valuable contribution, it was decided that player of the tournament would go to Logan Benson of 11SGRR. The Volleyball side of the draw was no less spectacular and while we were a little light on wins, I can say with certainty that our players all gave a massive effort and had a great time on the court. I would like to congratulate our valiant volleyballers for their contribution and aspiration.

Junior Summerfest got underway in Week 10 and at the time of writing we have completed just the one round. As usual Summerfest has been compromised by inclement weather. Once again it is very heartening to see so many students eager to take part and contribute towards Sheppard House. I look forward to the remainder of the tourney.

Ka mau te wehi Ngati Mako!
