During week 8 of this term, the Year 12 Tourism classes were lucky enough to be able to take a trip up to Hanmer Springs on 20-21 March to spend the day as tourists and participate in a selection of tourist activities located in the popular alpine village.
Our first stop was the Hanmer Springs Hotel where we got to listen to speeches from Simon, a manager working at the hotel, as well as Ollie, a member of staff from Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools. These two men spoke to us in great detail about their roles within the tourism industry as well as ways in which us students could get involved working in tourism if we so please. These speeches were both very informative and were a great way to start the day. Before leaving we were even able to snap a quick photo outside of the hotel.
Next up we were led to the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools by Ollie. We spent a good chunk of time here, relaxing in the hot pools or enjoying the many hydroslides! As well as swimming, this is where we stopped to have lunch, either eating what we brought with us or purchasing something from the cafe.
Last, but certainly not least, we headed over to Amuri Jet Adventures. This activity consisted of jet boating at high speeds over the Waiau River, getting up close to rocks and cliff faces for just over 20 minutes. As well as this, we were able to experience the famous “Hamilton turn” which really got our adrenaline pumping, making this attraction even more thrilling!
Overall, we all had a great day out in Hanmer Springs. We really got to experience what it was like to be real tourists, even in a place which many of us had visited so many times before. It was great to learn more about the tourism industry and the things which you can see and do within New Zealand tourism!
Thank you to Mrs Glassenbury, Mrs Alino, Mrs Wilkins, Mr McLeod, Mr Boyland, and Mr Quigley for taking us on the trip.
