Hillary House News

Term One has been a busy one for students and staff in Hillary House. The year started hot with the Sports' Day held at the Rangiora A & P grounds. With a modified round of games due to the change in venue, Hillary was keen and vocal in their support of each other. A particular highlight was our amazing relay teams, with Hillary winning three of the four relays. At the end of a hot and exhausting day, Hillary ended up a credible third on the House standings.

Mid way through the term our community was shaken by the tragic terror attack in Christchurch. Our House assembly that Wednesday was a reflection of the change to our country, and students were offered information on where to seek help if they needed support. The singing of the National Anthem was especially poignant. 50 seconds of silence, one second for every victim was held.

Year 9 Hillary camp followed soon after, with a focus on inclusion and working together, and even though we had a mixed bag of weather, the students got out there and gave everything a go. Camp out on the first night saw singing around the fire and roasting marshmallows before heading to bed. The Flying Kiwi, and The Swamp were all highlights with the level of support and teamwork in the groups high.

With a third in Senior Summerfest Hillary has increased the gap between us and fourth place. Junior Summerfest continues this week with large numbers of very keen Year 9’s and 10’s taking part in both Volleyball and Benchball. Our focus for this fest has been around winning with humility and losing with grace and our students have done us proud.

Hillary House would also like to wish all the best to the students competing in sports over the holidays. Lilly Forbes is playing ice hockey for the  New Zealand under 18 team in Abu Dhabi, and Sam Johnstone who will attempt to break the age speed record in his jet boat, Little Chief, on the 21st of April.

I have really enjoyed the start of my tenure as Head of Hillary House. The support from students and staff alike has been superb. Enjoy your holidays and remember this: “You don't have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals.” – Sir Ed Hillary
