Mainstream Support Programme by RHS
RHS — September 22, 2019
This term, students in the Mainstream Support Programme have been busy participating in the Special Olympics Basketball Programme at Pioneer Stadium. We took 13 students along each Wednesday, one team competing each week in games in Division One and the other team participating in the skill development programme. The development across both groups during the term was clearly evident. The term finished with a full day tournament with 17 teams competing in three divisions. Both teams competed in five mini games against other teams across Christchurch. Our Rangiora Gold team competing in Division One finished 2nd overall and our newly skilled Rangiora Green participants in Division Three, finished 4th. All students grew in their skill level and ability to work as a team.
This term a group of senior students in the Mainstream support programme have been learning to use the Metro bus system. We have learnt how to purchase and register a Metro bus card, read and understand a bus timetable and catch a bus to a range of locations from Rangiora to Christchurch. Our programme finished with a trip to ARA Institute where we participated in a supported learning class and had a tour of the campus. Students were able to meet and spend the morning with ARA learners and find out pathways for further learning. Our students are now keen to investigate opportunities for themselves beyond school.
