Ben seeing his artwork painted onto the Chorus box by RHS

Lighthouse Programme

RHSSeptember 15, 2023

Senior students in the Lighthouse Programme have continued on their cooking journey at COMCOL this term. A group of five students spent the first 5 Mondays of this term at COMCOL, where they were given the opportunity to take charge of their cooking experience. They started by selecting meals they would like to cook and each week they planned their shopping lists and made a trip to the supermarket to purchase their ingredients before returning to COMCOL to prepare and enjoy their meals. They have enjoyed making meals such as butter chicken and naan bread, spaghetti and meatballs and a big breakfast. The goal was not only to cook and enjoy delicious meals but also to develop important life skills. Our students certainly enjoyed their experience and we are proud to see that they have been putting these skills into practice at home by preparing meals for their families.

But that’s not all! A second group of eight students is currently participating in a COMCOL programme every Monday. Their focus is crafting the perfect afternoon tea and drink combinations and developing their hospitality skills. Through this experience they are learning how to welcome guests into their homes, where they might be treated to savoury cheese rolls, scones or a fruit skewer and a hot drink or smoothie.

Beyond our adventures at COMCOL our students continue to shine. We are excited to congratulate Ben Wild, one of our talented young artists for his recent achievement. Ben’s original artwork was recently recreated on the side of a Chorus box in Rolleston, adding a touch of creativity and colour to the neighbourhood. Ben has also developed a mini - enterprise from his artwork and will soon begin preparing Christmas cards for sale, these were very popular last year and we hope to replicate that success again this year.
