Winter Tournament

RHS was well represented around the South Island during tournament week Sunday 27 August - Sunday 3 September with a significant number of teaching staff away along with approx 170 students. This presented our students with a fantastic opportunity to gain knowledge through firsthand experiences, pushing their boundaries in their quest for success while forming enduring bonds and cherished memories to take away with them as they move into their adult lives.

Basketball

We had 14 teams entered in SSC Friday Night Basketball competition, which saw us finish with 2x 2nd, 3x 3rd, 2x 4th, 3x 5th, 2x 6th and 2x 7th placings.

Congratulations to our U17 Boys team, because after a long and hard fought season they won the Canterbury Basketball Association U17A competition.

Huge week of basketball for RaHS, with 4 teams playing at SISS tournaments in Dunedin and 1 at the Southern cup in Timaru. It’s been a huge effort both on and off the court and we want to thank everyone who has helped RaHS basketball throughout this year. Especially our referees who have helped referee on Tuesday & Friday nights, Saturday mornings. Also our 3 referees who travelled to tournament Ethan Lawrence, Brock Harlum and Cheyenne Coles. Cheyenne was selected to referee the Girls final at Southern cup!

Congratulations and good luck to our Senior Girls who qualify for Nationals that will take place in Palmerston North later this month.

Equestrian

Our students competed at the Secondary School One Day Event (show jumping, dressage & cross country) at the end of August. All of our 5 riders rode double clear rounds and individually finished 3rd, 5th & 6th. Unfortunately one of the riders missed a jump in the xc dropping her to 15th individually. As a team of four, they finished 8th out of 22 teams. One of our riders rode in a composite team.

Football

  • Girls 1st XI:
    • Competed against STAC in the semi-final of the Mainland Football Premier Cup and secured a 4th place finish. A massive thank you to Elise Brambley and Tony Jones for all your time spent with the girls during the season and to Mitch Grant who joined the team at the winter tournament this year.
    • Tottenham Hotspurs Visit: In mid-August, the team had the privilege of hosting coaches from Tottenham Hotspurs’ development program. The day featured skill-building sessions and an inspiring discussion on pursuing a career as a professional footballer. The Tottenham Hotspurs coaches also shared their personal journeys in professional football and handed out goody bags to our players. Thanks to Lauren Annan & Emma Lyon for their winning entries with Tottenham Hotspurs sponsors AIA.
  • Boys 1st XI: The Boys 1st XI played off for 5th v 6th in the Mainland Football Premier Championship on 16th August in wet, cold southerly conditions. The conclusion of another challenging season for the team, characterised by great camaraderie among the players. Jason Fahey & Keith Anderson have once again grown a great culture within this team throughout the season and we thank you for your time & dedication during the season.
  • Junior Boys: (Div2 School Sport Canterbury Wednesday Competition) The team continued to play strongly throughout the later end of the season and wrapped up finishing in 6th place among a field of 9 teams. There is some great talent coming through at this level. Thanks to Mario Williams and Richard Winson for another season of encouragement and great coaching.

Hockey

The 6 aside team clinched the top spot among five competing teams this season in the School Sport Canterbury Wednesday competition. The team includes some of our international students. A big thank you to parents Claudia & Rich Grigg for providing encouragement to the team along with transportation each week to/from their games this season, we really do appreciate the support you gave to this team.

The girls hockey team had a great season moving up into a higher tiered competition the girls competed very well reaching the final of this weekly competition, narrowly losing on penalty sudden death penalty shoot outs in the final to finish second.

The boys team continued their strong run in the lower division only losing one game all season before reaching the final to convincingly win 3-1.

Both teams travelled to Greymouth to attend their respective south island tournaments, this was the first time in many years that the hockey teams had attended tournament week so all parties were very excited. The week itself went really well with Greymouth putting on surprisingly pleasant weather and the teams both performing exceptionally well. The girls put their previous shootout practice to work, drawing both the semi and grand final, this time around the girls did enough winning both penalty shoot outs to win the tournament. The boys side also reached the final narrowly losing 2-1 to a strong Logan Park High School team, the boys put in a top effort and were initially gutted with finishing second.

A big thank you to Simon, Kirk, Merv, Ning and Joe and everyone else who has supported the teams throughout the season.

Netball

Our Senior A netballers spent the week at the South Island Secondary Schools tournament held in Invercargill. A season’s worth of hard work was on display across the 4 days of competition. The team walked away with 5 great wins and 3 close losses. Finishing up 18th overall in the final against Rangi Ruru. The team is grateful for the large family support that travelled to watch them play and cheer them on from the sidelines. The team farewells three key defenders of the team and our treasured Year 13’s, Lily Keating, Elise Gemmell and Emma Loufhaggen. We wish them well for their future sporting and netball endeavours.

Rifle Shooting

The team of Georgyna Orchard, Oliver Kelly, and Kimberlea Orchard competed against 32 other top small bore rifle shooting teams from around the country on the weekend of 9/10 September. The team finished 12th overall, with Georgyna coming in second in the country (with 1st place being shared by 3 individuals). This impressive score meant she qualified for the South Island team. This team went head to head in a close loss to the North Island. Georgyna's impressive shooting throughout the day had her come in 3rd in NZ and meant she was selected for the NZ team to go to shoot against Great Britain.

The 3 students that made up this rifle shooting team have been presented with blazers (Kimberlea was absent in the photos due to an exam).

Rugby

The U15 Tournament side selected from Green, Gold and U16s travelled to Alexandra to play in the annual Rural Livestock U15 tournament. The team played some great rugby against top opposition. Results were two wins, two losses and a draw across the three days. Some great rugby played, awesome for player development, and a really enjoyable week. Thank you to all of those involved in making this tournament a success.

Trampolining

Students Lukkah Opthoog, Phoenix Johnson, Meg Dunn & Teagan McIntosh represented the school at the 2023 Canterbury Secondary Schools Trampolining Competition. The students completed both individually and as a team winning the team competition.

Rural Livestock Tournament 2023 – Alexandra

A great experience for everyone involved in the Rangiora High School U15 tournament side, Central Otago turned on 5 days of great weather for our tour, the grounds, and facilities at Dunstan High School and Molyneux Park where ideal for the tournament with plenty of space and each field was in great condition for playing fast rugby.

The accommodation we had at Highlands Park in Cromwell was outstanding and very comfortable, this set us up nicely to have the team feeling good away from home and I know they all enjoyed their apartments.

Our performance in the tournament was of good quality, we played some outstanding rugby each day and had patches that we could have played better, the nature of the tournament was fast and of high attrition, we played well in our morning games but did struggle to lift at times for our afternoon games.

The effort from our side was never lacking, we had 2 very strong wins, 1 draw and 2 loses, 1 of the loses being the 1B semifinal.

Our 2 wins were against Taieri and Whakatipu where we showcased our attack plans, and our defence was at its best.

Our draw was against Ashburton 19-19, this game was unfortunately an aggressive natured game and Ashburton played extremely ill disciplined which the referee struggled to control, we felt this game was not in the spirit of what the rest of the tournament had been and we left the day disappointed with what had happened and how we had been treated, but that just seems to be Mid Canterbury Rugby!!

Our 2 losses were against South Otago, 1 round robin game and the 1B semi-final, in both these games we lost by 5 points, unfortunately we started both fixtures slowly and managed to work our way back into each game but just not quite enough to get the results.

Our team was extremely lucky to experience so much they wouldn’t have before, we travelled to & around Central Otago, had a team photo in front of Mt Cook, had Meg Richardson as our team physio something the players soon realised was pivotal to keeping us on the field, stayed in outstanding accommodation that was a very rare opportunity, played high paced tournament rugby, built friendships and team culture, and did it all as 1 team.

There were a couple of isolated incidents but these did not define our team’s overall behaviour, commitment, and effort to this tournament.

On behalf of the Coaches and Management it was a pleasure to be involved in this team and we look forward to seeing the players progress further next season, we also wish next year's U15 tournament side all the best success in their tournament.

Kind Regards,

Mike Streatfield
