Year 12 Social Studies - Social Action Projects

RHSSeptember 15, 2023

Year 12 Social Studies students are carrying out Social Action to address an issue which is important to them.

A wide range of action has been carried out this term involving ideas such as tree planting, animal welfare support, anti-vaping, Salvation Army and food waste. As a keen sportsman, Lachie Cameron-James was concerned about the role of spectators in maintaining a positive environment for students playing sports. So here is some information and helpful tips for all spectators to consider.

We have a problem in New Zealand with sideline negativity in sports. Survey results show that 53 percent of people have seen aggressive behaviour on the sideline. 20 per cent had seen actual violence, including 7 per cent witnessing that violence directed at the children playing. One in 10 admitted to personally having carried out that poor behaviour, including ridiculing children, shouting and use of bad language. The impact of this is unnecessary violence, loss of enjoyment for players and young people turning away from the sport they love. Take a look at your own behaviour on the sideline, are you a positive supporter? Here are some things you could do below.
