Embracing Mihi Whakatau: Welcoming Practice in School Culture

Liana Abraham —

Explanation of the mihi whakatau process, a norm at our school, welcoming new arrivals in a culturally rich manner, fostering inclusion and community spirit.

It was a privilege to welcome some students from Japan through one of our ways of being - Mihi Whakatau. The mihi whakatau is a special welcoming process that shares similarities with a pōwhiri, fostering respect and inclusion. It occurs outside the marae setting and aims to greet new members warmly, following tikanga Māori. By embracing such traditions, we establish a cultural foundation for our school from day one. Encouraging students and families to participate in these practices helps normalise and cherish our cultural heritage. Let's embrace this beautiful tradition together as we welcome all newcomers with open hearts and minds into our kura.
