Just Brass - a music tuition programme for our children.
Just Brass is an exciting programme where children learn a brass instrument free of charge right here at school.
Just Brass is an exciting programme that was started in Rangiora in Term 2 of 2019 by The Salvation Army. 16 to 20 primary and intermediate aged children are given brass instrument tuition at the school on Mondays and join together for a band practice weekly on Monday at our church, both led by Barrett Hocking.
We have wonderful partnerships with Ashgrove and Rangiora Borough Schools who have supported us to do Just Brass and have provided many students the opportunity to learn a brass instrument free of charge.
Making music and playing in a band has brought about significant change for many children. Reading music, counting beats, working as a team and the discipline of practice are transformational attributes that enhance learning and social skills in every aspect of the children’s lives. As well as enjoying music, the students gain confidence, teamwork and leadership skills, a sense of achievement and experience educational benefits as well. Some of the educational outcomes include;
- improvement in reading,
- more focus,
- happier and more contented
- a general increase in academic results.
The dedication given to the children over the long-term increases the children’s sense of self-worth. The programme offers students the opportunity to try something new and opens the door to a new pathway for achievement.
The Just Brass Band plays concerts at the end of every term. These are for family, friends, and supporters to come along and see what it’s all about! There have also been opportunities in the past to play at aged care facilities, parks, school fairs and assemblies.
