Our year started with the heartbreaking news that our tumuaki (principal) Mr Alan Sutton had passed away. The first couple of weeks were spent coming to terms with his unexpected death and trying to support one another through our grief. We, as Board, are thankful that our Management Team and Team Leaders were able to provide a space for staff, students, whānau and our wider school community to come together, pay their respects and share stories of their friend, colleague, teacher and principal.

The celebration of Alan’s life, held the afternoon of 12 February, was an opportunity to not only farewell Mr Sutton, but also to unveil the memorial plaques created in his honour. These plaques now take pride of place on the final building projects Alan was involved in; the Sutton Stage under the ‘big tree’ and The Alan Sutton Memorial Library: Te Puna Mātauraka - The Heart of Learning.

The Board has had its first hui of the year and we are now in the early stages of working out how we undertake finding a worthy successor. This will be a long and difficult task which will require input from our school community. We ask that you please think about and respond to any communication or opportunities to provide feedback on the type of person you would like to see leading our school. Me mahi tahi tātou mō te oranga o te katoa.

The Rangiora Borough School Board of Trustees met on the 5th August. Below is a highlight of some of the items discussed.

5.8.19

· Rangiora Borough new school library project – the school are continuing to work with our architects to finalise the design for the new school library. The library will be sited in the same location as our existing library. Whilst timeframes are still being confirmed, we are hoping to have the new building ready within the next 12 months.

· ETXT – The Board have signed up to ETXT. This is a text message service used to connect with large groups of people. We will be adopting this as our preferred mode of contact with whanau during any emergency situations e.g. earthquake or lockdown. For ETXT to work effectively, we require correct cell phone numbers for you all. We are currently in the process of obtaining updated contact details so we ask that you please ensure you complete the form recently sent out.

· Emergency Fire and Lockdown Drills – the school have recently undertaken evacuation drills. As part of our continuous improvement mind set, feedback from teachers is sought after each drill and any learnings are taken on-board for the future.

· The Board acknowledged the success of the Kids Market held during the July school holidays and would specifically like to thank the PTA for their efforts in making it such a success.

· New senior playground – continued discussions are taking place regarding the proposed new senior playground. We will soon be exploring specific design options and hope to reach out to our students to seek their input and guidance too.
