So... what have the children in Kōtare been doing lately?

Angela Newland —

  • E Pro 8,
  • Showquest,
  • Science experiments,
  • Rocket launching,
  • Elephant toothpaste
  • Scratch coding,
  • Banqer
  • Pick a path
  • Catch the Flag tournament.

This term we have been very busy firstly with the exciting experience of winning Showquest, then a group of us featured on 'What Now' to celebrate this success.

Other students have been working through the E Pro 8 challenge developing skills through mechanics and technology challenges. There was a practise day and then a prescribed challenge for the students to accomplish in order to move on the North Canterbury play offs. We have selected two teams to train up and they will be heading off on the 27th of June to compete.

Classes have been partaking in science experiments using physics (rocket launching) and chemistry (elephant toothpaste). Sometimes with these experiments we have not succeeded on our first attempts but have hypothesised and concluded reasons why. Using our problem solving skills we have obtained success.

Scratch coding has been a feature of our afternoons in preparation for an interactive Turangawaewae project next term. Some of our classes have begun using Banqer financial literacy this term, giving the children a back account and teaching them about, income, expenditure, insurance and kiwisaver concepts.

The four classes of Kōtare have had 'Catch the Flag' playoffs too. Each class created 2 teams each and had a round robin competition. The points have been based on 3 points a win, 2 points a draw and 1 point a loss. Semi Finals and Finals will be played next week. The kids have loved these play offs as this game caters for the logical thinkers as well at those who love to get out and run.

We have sent a netball team, a rugby team and a football team to the Friday sport competition locally to play off other North Canterbury schools.

We have also had a lot of success with Maths, reading and writing challenges too. Pick a path stories have been a massive highlight for our learners in writing. We will be finishing off the term with more interactive games for example the 'Catch the Flag final, NZ Music Month singing festival, E Pro 8 NC final and we are sending a Korfball team again to another tournament at Mainpower. Just to name a few.

Please note next term we have swimming starting in week one on Wednesday and Fridays for 5 weeks, between 12.30 and 2.30pm.
