Ngā Rākau e Rua - a bilingual education setting at Rangiora Borough School

Bilingual Education available in Rangiora

Are you interested in a bilingual education for your child? Did you know that there is an option for this in Rangiora? Read on to find out more ...

Tēnā koutou katoa.

Ngā Rākau e Rua is a Te Ao Māori setting at Rangiora Borough School for Years 1 - 8.

The aim is to produce a bilingual student who is able to converse in both Māori and English, establishing a strong foundation in both languages along with a bi-cultural outlook on personal, communal and global issues.

As this is a special character setting, enrolment is not based on school zoning, but on your aspirations for your child to learn through a Te Ao Māori lens.

Why choose a bilingual setting?

You might want to connect your child with your culture and unique world view.  Studies also show that bilingual students often excel in problem -solving, critical thinking, and creativity.

You do not need to be fluent in Te Reo to enrol, you just need to be committed to support your child in their journey to learn.

Benefits of bilingual education/Ngā whāi panga i te akomanga reorua:

  • Learning another language awakens an otherwise dormant part of the brain

  • It improves mental agility and memory retention

  • It strengthens first language skills

  • Certain languages have links to other related languages

  • Along with the language comes an understanding of another culture

Speaking te reo Māori/Kōrero te reo Māori…

  • helps to revitalise the language and restore cultural identity

  • enables the speaker to link with, understand and immerse themselves in te ao Māori (the Māori world)

  • strengthens the connection between a Māori student and their cultural heritage

  • enables the speaker to communicate in a way that only te reo uniquely provides
