Languages 2023

Karyn Gray —

With the retirement of Yuko - our Japanese teacher we have made the decision that from 2023 onwards the two languages to choose from in the Upper School will be German or Te Reo. We are committed to growing the Te Reo language in the school and ultimately offering it right through until Class 12.

Over the next transition years we would like to offer students who have already begun a journey in Japanese the opportunity to continue that through a correspondence programme. This will be supervised and we may be able to provide some weekly mentoring from a speaker of Japanese.

Over the next week either Grant or Karyn will be in touch with whānau of those learners who have taken Japanese in this year's Classes 8 and 9 to see whether they would like to continue Japanese by correspondence or move to Te Reo in 2023.

The whānau for the current Class 7 will be contacted in order to make a choice between German or Te Reo.

For students choosing German we still have a commitment to integrating Te Reo and aspects of Te Ao Maori into Main lessons and other subjects as well.

Grant or Karyn will also be in touch with the current Class 10 students who have selected Japanese as an elective option to discuss correspondence arrangements.

As always if there is someone wanting to study another language we can cater for that through a correspondence option.
