Class 5 Trip to Matiu/Somes Island

Geoff Heath —

The first time we tried to go on this trip was the Monday that everything got flooded a week or so back.  We decided not to go that day!

When we did go, we were treated to seeing a Giant Cook Island Weta, massive gekos (hiding in the toilets of course) and being dive bombed by many Black Backed gulls protecting their nests.

Clare Goodman was good enough to take the class around the island (she is a volunteer there so knows her stuff).  We were so engrossed in feeding the sheep, watching the gulls, looking in the World War II bunkers, and hearing about the lighthouse keepers house that we had to run back to the wharf in order to catch the ferry.
