Making Manu Tukutuku

Irene Cheung —

Ururangi is the whetu in the Matariki cluster that connects us to the winds.

Class 6 have been working on creating Manu Tukutuku - kites based on a traditional Maori design.

Using bamboo stakes, ākonga worked on making a frame to weave nīkau fronds through.  They found this was not as straight forward as they thought.  With adjustments and re-designs taking place, many of the ākonga were able to make a stable frame size that could hold their nīkau fronds.

Hopefully the completion of the project will coincide perfectly with some windy days to test out designs.
