Matariki at Te Papa

Clare Goodman —

Matariki hunga nui, te mātahi o te tau. Nau mai rā!*

Matariki becomes a public holiday in Aotearoa New Zealand on 24th June 2022 signaling the Māori New Year and is celebrated in the southern hemisphere midwinter following the rising of the star cluster Matariki (Pleiades).

The name “Matariki” is a shortening of the phrase ‘Ngā mata o te ariki o Tāwhirimātea’ (The eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea). It is a time to gather with family and friends to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.

In honour of this momentous occasion, Te Papa has a week-long programme of free, whānau-friendly events on offer. We look forward to celebrating with you all!

*Matariki is about coming together and celebrating the New Year
