This year, seven students from Raphael House participated in the Tukino Youth Development Ski Squad, a series of four weekends where students develop their snow skills in small groups at the club field on Mt Ruapehu.
Weekend One saw some high winds with the youth showing great resilience in getting out skiing anyway, and were rewarded with wind-assist to ski all the way up the hill to the lodge!
Covid then intervened and the middle two weekends we missed over lockdown. Last weekend, the final sessions were able to go ahead at Covid Level Two under gorgeous bluebird skies. The traditional end of squad party was unable to proceed, so as a consolation Tukino staff created night skiing - a new experience for the youth and many of their parents alike!
Despite missing two of the weekends all the Raphael House students progressed amazingly this year, both in their skiing skills and broader personal development. Getting organised with all the right gear for the activity and conditions, self management in all kinds of weather, and pushing personal boundaries were all evident, along with loads of fun and friendship.
