Class 9 Learning

Karyn Gray —

Class 9 has started the year with a Probability Main Lesson.

This is always fun, running experiments with gold coins, dice, and coloured counters (or as the students call them, fruit bursts).

We explore the origins of modern probability thinking (gambling), touch on current applications (Chaos theory, risk management…), calculate theoretical probabilities (coin tossing anyone?) and compare to experimental results (unfortunately the true probability of getting a head or a tail is NOT 50%).

We consider the awkward and confronting reality of the Monty Hall problem, and finish with a simulation of Benford’s Law which is used by forensic accountants to accurately test for fraudulent business accounts.

And along the way learn some maths and provide opportunities for logic, critical thinking, and fun.
