Irene Cheung —

After much discussion, timetable organisation and advocacy from many of our Upper School students, our very first Upper School Kapahaka session was launched this week.

This session was well attended by Classes 8,9, and 10, with strong representation from Classes 11 and 12. Many of the waiata sung, was familiar to the Upper School.  It was wonderful to see so many of them joining in with waiata they remembered from the Lower School.

This roopu will build from the foundations laid by Matua Rangi over the last four years. We will be adding new waiata to our repetoire and as well adjusting pitches to accommodate matured and maturing voices, under the guidance of Vanya. Whaea Karen has already begun teaching waiata for our mid-winter Matariki festival.  There is also a group of ākonga keen to take on roles as kaitataki - leaders, in singing and guitar playing.  We're looking forward to developing this leadership. And as well the ability to have across school participation in mihi whakatau, our Matariki festival, Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori 2021 and other school events/activities.
