Mahuru
Me kite, Me Rongo, Me Korero
Nau mai, hoki mai anō ki Mahuru Māori - Kia kaha te reo Māori!
Are you ready for the challenge?
This year marks a whole decade since ‘Mahuru Māori’ began as a social experiment, as a way to broadcast te reo Māori and normalise it in everyday dealings. Since then, thousands of people have taken up the challenge to learn and speak more te reo Māori throughout the month of Mahuru, and beyond.
Mahuru is the traditional Māori name for the lunar month known in English as September, and the aim of Mahuru Māori is to learn and gain the confidence to speak te reo Māori in our everyday lives, whether you are fluent, just learning, or anywhere in between. Every time you do, you’re revitalising te reo Māori and breathing life back into our native tongue.
Set yourself a goal and go for it - karawhuia! Start with a simple greeting or farewell each day, half an hour or half a day; anything that makes you speak more te reo Māori.
Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui - be strong, be brave - Be strong, be brave, be steadfast.
What challenge will you set yourself?
