New Decodable Readers

Irene Cheung —

New reading books, called decodable readers, have been purchased recently for our Lower School reading programme.

Many of the Lower School kaiako have been involved in professional development around the best way to teach tamariki to learn to read.  This programme called Structured Literacy emphasises a systematic teaching approach to literacy. It utilises decodable books which are written with selected blends of letter sounds (phonemes) and the letters that represent them (graphemes). The text in books is limited to the phonemes that have been taught.  These books herald an exciting way to ensuring our ākonga are experiencing success in their learning journeys towards becoming fluent readers.

We ask that those ākonga, in classes who are bringing these readers home, look after them carefully and return them back to school.  In cases where these books are lost or damaged parents are able to purchase a replacement book via KINDO. The cost to replace a book is $8.
