Lower School Handwork

Karyn Gray —

Handwork in the Lower school is one of our Special Character features.

In handwork our students begin in Class 1 staying with their teachers working on small projects that they can finish completely such as jellyfish and treasure pouches.

In Class 2 they start in the Handwork room by working on their e hoa which is a small kitting project creating a large knitted friend over the year.

Then in class 3 students work on their recorder case using Fair Isle knitting and then learn crochet.

Class 4 is the first embroidery year and students make a needle case.

Classes 2,3 and 4 have one full class handwork session and one session in half a class, where the other half go to music (we will feature Music another week). In Classes 5-6-7 the class is split in two and half go to handwork two spells a week for half the year while the others go to Woodwork. In the second half of the year the student groups swap over.

Class 5 Handwork students make clothing starting with a knitted hat, and then in Class 6 they create patterns and sew and paint animals.

In Class 7 the focus is on making a doll which combines all the previous skills they've learnt in handwork into this culminating project.

Some of your board donations go towards the salary for the LS Handwork teacher, which is not staffing provided by the government as it is not part of the NZ curriculum expectations.
