Our Cycle Safety Report By Asaria and Lily
This was read at last week's Paerangi Assembly
Day 1
Day one Constable Bob/Loren the police officer came and talked to us about the laws.
Like for example you will get fined 55 dollars if you ride on the footpath. We learnt about why we need to wear helmets, so we don't hurt our heads, and that the laws are not just to ruin your fun, they are to make you safe on your bike.
After that we went outside and practiced how to get on your bike and do signals. Signals are for when you are riding on the road and want to turn. You put your arm the way you want to turn and the cars will let you turn. Then we had a little ride around on the field and practiced changing our gears around and went up the hill and down the hill. Then we did our checks which are air, brakes, chain, and quick release and we did that every time we got to ride our bikes.
After lunch we got to ride down the road. We went to Lowry Avenue and did our first lesson. Our first lesson was about cars and that you need to stay a door and a bit away from cars while traveling along the road, in case someone opens their door and we get bowled over by the door. Then we rode back to school and we put our bikes away and said goodbye, see you tomorrow.
Day 2
We started the day off like this. We got into our 2 groups and both started to do some warm ups that we had learnt the day before, such as how to get on your bike properly and how to check your bike and how to change your gears on to the right setting.
After morning tea we went and started heading to Redwood Springs. While we were there we went down to the springs and put our hands in the water. We had about 15 minutes at the springs and then some kids asked to go on the playground and the adults gave in and let us have 5 minutes on the playground. Some girls went on the turny roundy thingy and got so dizzy our butts started sliding off the turny roundy thingy, that was fun!
Then when we all arrived at the hall. We did some competitions such as winning a slap band and getting some bike leaflets for finding the places on a map that we were given.
Then Asaria Patrick got a special mention because she helped Courtney with the signing.
