Christchurch Weet-Bix TryAthlon 2020

Pauline Prescott —

A great number of Redwood School tamariki took part in this year's event. Read what they had to say:

On Sunday my family and I went to Jellie Park to do the Weet-Bix Tryathlon.

It was a sunny day and I was very excited. After we set up our bikes we went to our school tent. A while later we got to do a fun warm up. My favourite warm up was the floss. On the stage there were lots of famous people like Kendra Cocksedge (a NZ girl rugby player). After the briefing me and my Mum went up to the swimming pool. It was very crowded so we had to stick together. The swim was twisty and turny. I was with one of my best friends. On the bike I saw my Grandad who was on his bike and waving to me. On the run I got a bit of a stitch but I sprinted at the end. On the run it was so cool they gave us a drink of water. After the race we got medals and had photos with my school friends. I had such a fun day. I would suggest to kids that they have a try next year.

A big thank you to Mr Thurlow, for coming to the Weet-Bix TryAthlon. We all thank you for watching. We all properly enjoyed it from doing it our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, maybe 4th or more times. Some people did it in the morning which was an early start. There was also one in the afternoon some Redwood kids did it.

It was a swim, a little run, bike, and then a big run to the finish line. There was breakfast there, cool activities, prizes and warm ups. It was great fun!!

Hi, our names are Max and Curtis and we are two of the 3000 competitors that entered for the Weet-Bix Tryathlon in Christchurch at Jellie Park in 2020!

When we arrived we walked our bikes down the footpath into Jellie Park. We parked our bikes next to the pink balloons, so we were able to locate them quickly.

First we needed numbers written on our arms and legs so the organisers. knew who we were. After that we parked our bikes next to some pink balloons, so we were able to locate them quickly. We parked. We checked that we had the necessary equipment, such as towels and a bike helmet. Then we went to the Redwood school tent to wait for our events.

In our first league we swam two lengths of the pool, but most people ran instead of swimming because the pool was quite shallow.

After our swim we ran down a small path to where we parked our bikes. Then we dried ourselves and put on our tee-shirt and helmet.

Then we started our bike ride. It was about 2 km per lap and lots of people were racing past us.

We stayed together so we didn't get split up.

Our final event was the run which was 1.5km. It was very tiring but they gave us cups of water so we could stay hydrated. But I don’t think it helped very much, as it gave us bad cramps.

At the finish line we got our medals presented by Kendra Cocksedge who is a very good rugby player. After that we were very sweaty and we got our photos taken.

When we got back to the school tent, Mr Thurlow did a winners photo where we bit on our medals, the medals were cold and tasted weird.

THE END!
