Matariki Celebrations
Liam and Ollie in Room 16 created a wonderful poster for Matariki last week. They worked together to illustrate each of the 9 stars and what each of the stars represent.
The stars signify the start of the Māori New Year. We look to the skies and if the stars shine brightly then it will be a good year for what the star(s) represent. These are what each of the stars represent.
1. Matariki - The Mother star. This star represents reflection, hope and our connection to the environment. This star also represents the health and wellbeing of the people.
2. Pōhutukawa - This star represents remembering the people that have passed.
3. Waitī - This star represents food from fresh water. Can you see the eels in this illustration?
4. Waitā - This star represents food from the ocean.
5. Waipuna-ā-rangi - This is the star that represents the rain. The rain that falls for us to drink, and to help everything grow.
6.Tupuānuku - This star represents food grown in the ground, and good harvesting for the season.
7. Tupuārangi - This star represents food grown above the ground, like fruit, berries and birds.
8. Ururangi - This is the wind star. Will the winds be strong or gentle over the next year?
9. Hiwa-i-te-rangi - This is the star of hope, wishes and aspirations. What do you want to achieve this year?
Together these stars encourage reflection on the past, and planning for the future as well as celebrating with the people you have around you. Ka pai Liam and Ollie! We love all the detail and mahi that you have put into this fantastic poster!
