Cross Country

Curtis J —

Held at Murchison Park

The night before cross country I felt excited because I really wanted to go to zones. I wanted to go to zones because I am always racing the same people at school and at zones I could vs other schools.

At night I felt a little bit nervous because I would be doing 2 laps of the cross country course. I couldn’t get to sleep that night because I had so many butterflies in my tummy.

When I arrived at school none of the year 5 boys were there ( except me of course ) and I was still nervous because the year before I learnt that there were very good runners in my year. “Hopefully I can beat them,” I thought. After I unpacked my bag my friend arrived at school and that made me feel better because I could talk with him. I completely forgot about cross country until the bell. It was a good day until we were walking to Murchison Park for the cross country.

The race began with a big mob of kids running past each other stomping like elephants. In the first few minutes when all the kids were out of the view of the teachers and parents a few kids started walking. I was up at the playground in the top 5 kids, suddenly one of the really fast kids that I saw earlier ran past. I increased by pace for a few seconds to run back into the top 5 kids, where I stayed for a long time, even over the bridge.

Then one more student past me but I was fine because I would still get to zones in sixth place. Later, in the middle of the second lap my friend kept trying to run past me but I really wanted to go to zones so I didn’t let that happen. When I was very close to the end, students and adults were cheering for me. I crossed the finish line with my friend a few meters behind me. I had come sixth so I was in zones , yay!!!

After the race I felt like a sweaty gym towel. When I got home I called my mum to tell her the exciting news, she was really impressed and so were my caregiver . I was mostly happy because I going to to zones.
