2019 McDonald's Youth Duathlon

Matai, Cooper, Daniel, Leon, Zara —

Some of our tamariki competed in this year's event on Sunday. Well done to everyone who had a go.

On Sunday the 7th of April 2019 we arrived at Hagley Park, it was very early and ice cold. I felt like I was going to get frostbite, so I started to go for runs for about 10 minutes. I played with my friend Jonty D.  We were both getting to point where we wanted to go and do it now.  We ran 1k, biked 4k and ran 500 metres.  Thanks to all the people that helped.

I had lots of people that I knew do it with me, it was the best day ever!

On Sunday 7th of April 2019 I went to the McDonalds duathlon at Hagley Park.  For a warm up I ran around the soccer field. You had to run1km, bike 4km and then run another 500m. I think the McDonalds duathlon was a good thing to get me up and running on the weekend.

On Sunday 7th of April 2019 at South Hagley Park. I started to warm up for the McDonalds duathlon.  It was freezing that morning. You had to run 1 km, then bike 4km and sprint 500 m. I think the duathlon was an amazing opportunity for me! I saw heaps of my friends there. I set a goal for myself - it was to beat my friends in the duathlon.

I am waiting for my race to start. Just thinking about it made me feel sick - 1k run, 4k cycle and finally a 500 metre run!

I’m in the middle of wondering if I will get frostbite when I hear Ronald McDonalds voice ring out. “Ten year old boys, over here, ten year old boys!” 10 minutes later I am riding my bike along the smooth path. Another 10 minutes later I am parking my bike up and disaster strikes!!! My fingers are so cold that I cannot take off my helmet! But help comes quickly. Luke J who was riding his bike right behind me came to my aid. We finished together and I received a gold medal for my efforts!

On Sunday the 7th of April 2019 I did my first Duathlon! It was very very exciting. We got up really early in the morning because we had to get a parking space at Hagley Park. There were more than 1000 kids taking part! The race was so long but I was not puffed at all. I got a gold medal at the end of the race to keep for ever.
