The Bread Experiment!

Daniela and Patience —

Kea and Tui hub have done an experiment and we would love to share our science experiment with you. It's called the “Bread Experiment”.

We are going to tell you how to do this experiment and WHAT happened to our slices of bread!

Hi I am Daniela would like to tell you how my fresh piece of bread turned into a mouldy piece of bread! After we finished and completed the instructions, we stuck the pieces of bread into the ziplock bag and taped them to a window that was facing the sun.

In the first 3 days nothing really happened, However on the start of day 4 the bread started to crinkle and curl up. The bread started to go stale and turned yellow.

Week two of the experiment. On day 1 the bread started to MOULD! While the week passed by, it moulded faster and faster! By the end of the week the bread was covered in mould it was absolutely rotten. It was really satisfying watching and predicting what would happen to the bread throughout the week, we were so impatient waiting for the bread to go mouldy, but I was glad it worked!

Hi, I am Patience and I am also very thrilled to tell you how my piece of bread turned into a mouldy piece of bread. I put my piece of bread on a surface, the door knob! On the first few days of the experiment my bread stayed fresh, although it started to become stale and would curl up then my bag became condensated. The next week was here and I didn’t notice anything on one face of the bread but when I took a look at my bread on the opposite side.It was a sight to see such disgusting things on my piece of bread! It started to spread rapidly, it was quite surprising to see how it turned mouldy in only a week or two!

I (Daniela) personally liked trying this experiment and would definitely recommend you try doing this! This is only my opinion but Tui used brown bread and kea used white, I thought that white bread turned out to be better than brown bread but that is just in my opinion!

What are you waiting for? Go try this experiment out!

For this experiment you will need,

  • 3 fresh pieces of white bread

  • 3 sandwich size see through ziplock bags

  • 1 pair of scissors

  • Tape

  • 1 squirt worth of Sanitiser

  • One dirty hand

  • A dirty surface

To start off you will need to make sure your zip lock bag is clean!

1. Grab 3 pieces of fresh bread.

2. You need to sanitise your hand and gently wipe the palm of your sanitised hand on one of the pieces of bread.

3. Make your hands dirty.

4. Wipe the palm of your dirty hands on one of the other fresh slices.

5. Find any grubby or germy surface, and gently wipe the last fresh piece of bread on the surface you chose.

6. Open the ziplock bags and carefully place one bread slice into each of the 3 bags.

7. Find a place around the room

8. Hold the top of the ziplock bag and tape it to the place in the room. (Do that to all of the bread slices that you used.)

Now observe the slices of bread, wait for two weeks and watch the bread start to mould! We hoped you liked the experiment!
