Focus shifts to Knox Block

Dunedin City Council —

With the Farmers Block complete, work is now underway on the Knox Church Block as part of the George Street – Retail Quarter upgrade.

Initially, work on this block is focused on the replacement of three waters infrastructure (water pipes, wastewater pipes and stormwater pipes) – some of which date back to the late 1800s. This will be followed by above-ground improvements such as new paving, and safety, accessibility and amenity improvements.

This block will take about 10 months to complete. It is now closed to through traffic to allow for the replacement of underground pipes. Access to off-street parking and for deliveries for businesses on the block will be retained throughout, though there may be restrictions at times.

We’ve been in regular communication with businesses on this block leading up to this work. Following discussions with businesses in the area, we brought work on this block forward to do as much work as possible while students are out of town over summer.

It is acknowledged that the work is disruptive. However, it is important to maintain critical infrastructure such as water pipes and we are working with individual businesses to minimise disruption as much as possible. We encourage Dunedin residents to get out and support local businesses during the construction period.

The Knox Block will be open to two-way traffic once work is complete. The one-way design for George Street is from the London/Pitt/Frederick intersection to the Moray Place intersection.
