At our school, we believe that sports play a crucial role in the overall development of our students. Participation in sports helps build physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, and a sense of achievement. We offer a wide range of sports activities to cater to the diverse interests and talents of our students.
Our Sports Programmes
Ki o Rahi: This traditional Māori game is a favourite at our school. Ki o Rahi combines elements of rugby, netball, and tag, and is played on a circular field. It not only promotes physical fitness but also helps students connect with Māori culture and heritage.
Football: Our football programme is designed to develop skills, strategy, and teamwork. Students of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate, whether they are beginners or aspiring professionals. Regular training sessions and matches help students improve their game and enjoy the spirit of competition.
Basketball: Basketball is a popular sport at our school, with teams for different age groups. Our basketball programme focuses on developing dribbling, shooting, and defensive skills. Students learn the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship while having fun on the court.
Athletics: Our athletics programme includes a variety of track and field events such as running, jumping, and throwing. Students have the opportunity to compete in school-wide events and represent our school in inter-school competitions. Athletics helps students build endurance, strength, and agility.
Cross Country: Cross country running is a great way for students to build stamina and enjoy the outdoors. Our cross country program encourages students to set personal goals and challenge themselves. Regular training sessions and competitions help students improve their endurance and running technique.
Swimming: We are proud to have our own heated, covered swimming pool which allows us to offer a comprehensive swimming programme. Swimming lessons are available for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced swimmers. Our school subsidised programme focuses on water safety, stroke development, and building confidence in the water.
Outside School Opportunities
We encourage our students to participate in sports activities beyond the school grounds to broaden their experiences and challenge themselves further. Here are some of the exciting opportunities available:
Northern Zone Sports: Throughout the year, our students have the chance to compete in various sports events organised by the Northern Zone. These events provide a platform for students to showcase their skills, compete against peers from other schools, and build sportsmanship.
Newlands Intermediate School Horokiwi Sports Day: This annual event is a highlight for our senior students. It offers a day of fun and competition, where students can participate in a range of sports activities, meet new friends, and enjoy the spirit of community and teamwork.
Our Commitment to Sports Excellence
We are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment where every student can enjoy and excel in sports. Our teachers work tirelessly to ensure that each student receives the guidance and encouragement they need to reach their full potential.
Participation in sports at our school is not just about winning; it’s about developing a love for physical activity, learning the value of teamwork, and building lifelong skills. We believe that sports are an essential part of a well-rounded education, and we are proud to offer a diverse range of activities that cater to the interests and abilities of all our students.
