Future Transport Collaboration

Sharyn Varcoe —

This term 9RD have been developing their skills in problem solving, effective communication and collaboration through producing group entries for the nationwide Future Transport Competition.

In small teams, the students have been working through a design process of Be Curious, Investigate, Create and Share to develop playable games or narratives that explore the challenges and opportunities they see in future transport.

Rather than being teacher directed, the students have had the autonomy to choose the direction of their learning.

The teachers involved have acted as facilitators, with regular face-to-face check-ins with the groups as well as online advice to individual students when self-reflecting on their skill development.

Co-facilitators, Helen Jermy and Sharyn Varcoe, have enjoyed the opportunity to work together in the classroom this term learning from each other and responding to the varying needs of the students.

By utilising the prototype collaborative learning space in D3/D4, the students have been able to choose a space that best suits their particular requirements at different stages of the process, including individual work online, small group discussion, quiet room video editing and practical construction of game boards.

As part of the project, many of the groups spent time in local primary schools receiving feedback about their prototypes from the younger students which they then incorporated into their final entries.

As a finale, parents and siblings were invited to join the class for a shared games session which was enjoyed by all.
